Emory University senior Paul Schwendel struck out a season-high 11 batters, leading the 2012 University Athletic Association (UAA) Champion Eagles to a 4-1 win over Case Western Reserve University in the final game of the conference tournament on Sunday.

With the win, Emory closed out UAA play with a 7-1 record, improving to 14-7 on the season.

Schwendel entered the game in relief of sophomore Jason Edwards, who pitched a scoreless first inning, and proceeded to allow just one run on six hits and a walk, while striking out 11 batters over the next seven innings.  The senior struck out three batters in each of the sixth and seventh innings.

Junior Mike Bitanga pitched the final inning to earn his fourth save of the tournament, and his seventh save of the year.  He is now one shy of the school record with 15 saves over his Emory career.

After falling behind 1-0, Emory scored a run in the bottom of the third on a Brandon Hannon single to tie the game.  With two outs in the fifth, Hannon singled again with two outs, and scored on a Jared Welch double in the next at bat to give the Eagles the lead.

Emory added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-RBI pinch hit single with the bases loaded for Daniel Iturrey.

Potter took the loss for Case, falling to 2-1 on the year, while the Spartans dropped to 10-6 on the year and 4-4 in UAA play.

Emory will return to action on Friday, March 23 at Huntingdon College.
