Box Score Sophomore Hannah
Lilly scored a game-high 21 points but it wasn't enough as the
Emory women's basketball team dropped its University Athletic
Association opener to No. 5-ranked Rochester Saturday
afternoon. The Yellowjackets of UR upped their overall
record to 11-0 (1-0 UAA) following a 76-64 decision over Emory who
slipped to 8-3 (0-1 UAA).
Rochester concluded the contests sinking 50 percent (31-of-62) of
its field goal attempts, just the second opponent to reach that
mark against Emory this season. The Yellowjackets sank 36.4
percent (4-of-11) from three-point range and knocked down 10-of-13
free throw attempts. Pacing the Rochester scoring attack was
Jodie Luther with 20 points. The Eagles connected on a
season-low 32.9 percent (26-of-79) from the floor including 26.1
percent from beyond the arc. Rochester finished with a 49-38
edge on the glass.
Rochester never trailed in the game, bolting out to a 13-5
advantage just a little over four minutes into the contest.
The Eagles fought back and knotted the affair at 15-15 following a
bucket by junior Misha Jackson with
12:42 left in the stanza, but the Yellowjackets used a 15-4 scoring
run over the next 6:16, with Luther, Laney Ming and Kristyn Wright
all scoring four points in that stretch, to claim a 30-19
lead. A three-pointer by Lilly with 3:07 on the clock drew
the Eagles to within six points, 34-28, but six points from Luther
keyed an 8-3 spurt over the remainder of the stanza to give UR a
42-31 lead at intermission. Luther totaled 18 points for the
Yellowjackets during the opening stanza, hitting eight-of-nine from
the floor and both of her free throw attempts. Lilly led the
Emory scoring effort with 10 points.
Rochester kept Emory at bay during the opening 10 minutes of the
second half and built a 15-point cushion, 64-49, with 8:59 left in
the contest following a triple by Ally Zywicki. The Eagles
then used a 9-0 surge, with Lilly scoring five and Jackson four
points, to claw back to within six points, 64-58, with 6:32 left in
the game. However, Rochester stymied the Emory comeback
bid with six unanswered points to build its lead back to a dozen
with 4:31 on the clock. From there, the closest Emory would
get was eight points as it saw its three-game winning streak come
to an end.
Jackson was the other Eagle to finish in double figures in scoring
with 10 points while tying for game-high honors with eight
boards.
Emory returns to action on Monday (Jan. 9) when it hosts Maryville
College in a 6:00 p.m. start.
