Box Score Sophomore Hannah Lilly scored a game-high 26 points and the Emory women's basketball team set a school record for steals Friday evening as it recorded a victory over Carnegie Mellon University in University Athletic Association action. The Eagles captured their fourth straight game and raised their record to 12-3 (3-1 UAA) with a 59-55 decision over the Tartans who slipped to 6-9 overall (0-4 UAA).
Lilly finished the evening sinking 10-of-17 from the field, including six-of-11 from three-point range, en route to her third straight and seventh game of the season with 20 or more points. Sophomore Savannah Morgan and junior Misha Jackson were next up on the team's scoresheet with eight points apiece while junior Danielle Landry grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Carnegie Mellon outshot the Emory from the floor, hitting on 42.6 percent (23-of-54) of its field goal opportunities compared to the Eagles' effort of 36.7 percent (22-of-60). The Tartans also finished with a 37-33 edge on the glass but were hampered by 34 turnovers that Emory turned in 31 points. The Eagles harassed CMU throughout the evening and established a school game record with 26 steals with Morgan, Lilly and senior Melissa Koike all ending the night with five thefts.
With Lilly scoring 18 points during the opening 20 minutes of play, the Eagles claimed a 37-33 edge at halftime. After falling behind by a 23-22 margin with 8:29 left in the stanza, Emory went on an 8-0 run, sparked by triples by Morgan and Lilly, to take a 30-23 edge with 7:17 left. After the Tartans battled back to within one point following a layup by Jacquie Shaw with 5:11 left on the clock, back-to-back buckets by Lilly pushed Emory's lead to 34-29. Following a Tartan basket, a trey by Morgan extended Emory's advantage to 37-31 with 45 ticks on the clock. A basket by CMU's Emily Peel closed out the scoring for the half.
A basket by Danielle Landry with 18:25 left in the game gave Emory what would be its largest lead of the night, 43-35. However, CMU responded with a 12-1 scoring spree, capped by a pair of free throws by Peel, to take a 47-44 lead with 12:19 left in the game. From there, Emory would score the game's next eight points while holding the Tartans scoreless for an 8:53 span in taking a 52-47 lead. After a trey by CMU's Gabrielle West snapped the dry spell for the visitors while drawing them to within two points, a three pointer by Lilly extended Emory's margin to 55-50. West answered with a triple of her own to cut CMU's deficit to two points with 2:50 remaining. A huge layup by Morgan with 44 seconds on the clock enabled Emory to go ahead by a 57-53 count before the Tartans responded with a basket to stay within two points with 30 seconds left. Jackson then closed out the game's scoring and sealed the outcome with a pair of free throws with two seconds left.
Emory returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 22) when it hosts Case Western in a 2:00 p.m. start.
