The Emory men's tennis team opened defense of its UAA
Championship in fine fashion on Friday as the No. 2-ranked Eagles
breezed by Rochester in a quarterfinal match. Emory, the No.
1 seed at the Championships, boosted its overall record to 18-3
following a 9-0 decision over the Yellowjackets who slipped to
11-9. Serving as the host for this year's competition
is Brandeis University.
After bolting to a 3-0 lead following doubles play, the Eagles
captured straight-set victories in all six singles matches,
dropping a total of just 10 games. Junior Chris Goodwin
notched the first win in that portion of the match with a 6-0, 6-0
verdict over Joel Allen at the No. 2 spot. The victory was
Goodwin's 17th in 20 decisions this spring.
Freshman Simon Lovoie-Perusse ran his win streak to seven with a
6-0, 6-2 triumph against Dan Barbash at No. 5 that clinched the
outcome of the match. Other Eagles to earn wins in singles included
freshman Nick Szczurek at No. 4, sophomore Dylan Wright at No. 6,
junior Dillon Pottish at No. 1 and senior Colin Egan at No. 3.
Pottish and Egan teamed up earlier at No. 3 doubles and bested the
UR tandem of Barbash and John Lewis, 8-3, improving their spring
slate to 16-3. Juniors Chris Goodwin and Will Humphreys won their
fourth straight outing at No. 1 with an 8-2 victory against Brian
Rice and Boris Borovcanin, upping their won-lost ledger to
17-4. Rounding out the dubs winners was the recently formed
duo of sophomore Noah Simonson and freshman Ayush Bajoria who
topped Matt Volkov and Jeff Zink, 8-2, at No. 2.
Emory advances to Saturday's semifinals where it will meet
the No. 4 seed and 17th-ranked Carnegie Mellon.
The Tartans (14-8) advanced following a 6-3 win over Brandeis.
