Emory Hitters Dominant in 15-3 Victory over Huntingdon

Box Score

The Emory University baseball team picked up its fourth straight win behind a 10-strikeout performance from Paul Schwendel and a four-RBI day from Patrick Riebsame, defeating Huntingdon College 15-3 at Chappell Park on Saturday.

Schwendel's 10 strikeouts were the most by an Emory pitcher since Ian Ganzer struck out 10 against Maryville College (Tenn.) on April 24, 2007.  He improved to 4-1 with a 4.89 ERA this season, allowing just three runs on eight hits and one walk in six innings pitched.

After falling behind 2-0 after an inning and a half, the Eagles got a run back in the second on a single from freshman Brandon Hannon with the bases loaded.  Huntingdon would get the run back in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run from Ryan Harrison, but Emory tied the game with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning, knotting the score at 3-3.

Emory would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth, with two runs scoring on a throwing error by the Huntingdon pitcher.  Riebsame would later drive in his first run of game on a single to right field, and then taking advantage of a run down, stealing home for the fourth run of the inning, giving Emory a 7-3 lead.

Emory added on four more runs in the fifth inning, including two on a double from Riebsame, one more in the seventh and three more in the eighth, scoring 14 unanswered runs to end the game.

Riebsame finished the day three-for-five with a double, a triple, four RBIs and three runs scored, and now leads all Emory players with 22 RBIs.  Other highlights from the Eagles' offensive attack include the first home run of Evan Plys' Emory career (a solo shot in the eighth inning), and a three-for-five day with two RBIs for Hannon, who ended the game with a .508 batting average.

Freshman Ryan Toscano pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief of Schwendel, while freshman Alexander Castaneda finished pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Emory improved to 14-7 on the season with the win, while the Hawks dropped to 14-5 with the loss, their second of the season to the Eagles.  The two teams will wrap up their season series tomorrow at 1:00 PM at Chappell Park.
