Emory Men's Basketball Races By Covenant College -- Boosts Record To 7-0

Box Score

Emory sophomore forward Jake Davis and senior guard Alex Gulotta combined for 35 points in helping the No. 10-ranked Eagles' basketball squad remain undefeated Saturday evening with a win over Covenant College.  Emory raised its record to 7-0 following a 79-53 decision over the Scots who fell to 4-2.

Davis finished with a game-high 19 points, hitting nine-of-15 from the field in 23 minutes of action en route to his seventh double-figure scoring performance of the season.  Gulotta buried six-of-10 from the floor, including a season-high tying four-of-eight from beyond the arc in registering his second straight 16-point effort.  Rounding out the club's double-figure scorers was senior Austin Claunch who registered 10 points while also contributing seven assists in 24 minutes of action.  Senior Justin Resnick and junior Michael Friedberg each chipped in nine points apiece with Friedberg adding six blocked shots to his stat line and Resnick a team-high six rebounds.

The story of the game took place in the first half as the Eagles bolted out to a 57-28 halftime lead.  Davis picked up 17 points during the opening 20 minutes of play while Gulotta scored all 16 of his game total in the first stanza.  Emory connected on 51.2 percent (22-of-43) of its field goal tries in the first half and was on fire from three-point range, knocking down nine-of-18 opportunities. A strong defensive effort by the Eagles forced a dozen first-half Covenant turnovers that they parlayed into 12 points.

Holding an 11-6 edge three minutes into the game, Emory peppered Covenant with a 24-9 scoring run over an 8:30 span to assume a 35-15 lead with 8:42 remaining in the stanza. A total of six different players scored during that spree including seven points from Gulotta and six points from senior Justin Resnick who rang up two of Emory's four treys in that stretch.   Covenant regrouped and clawed back to within 14 points with 5:24 left following a three pointer by Callum Sears, but Emory blitzed the visitors with an 18-3 barrage over the remainder of the half en route to the 29-point cushion at the break.  Davis picked up seven points in that span with Claunch adding four.

The Eagles opened the second half scoring 10 of the stanza's first 12 points, with Claunch hitting a pair of triples, to post their largest advantage of the night, 67-30, with 16:65 left on the clock.  Emory reserves saw the majority of action over the final 20 minutes of play with all 16 healthy players seeing action throughout the game and 11 finding their way into the scoring column.

Emory's 7-0 start to the season marks the second straight season and fourth time in school history that the program has captured its opening seven contests.

The Eagles return to action on Monday (Dec. 5) when they travel crosstown to battle Oglethorpe University in a 7:00 p.m. start.
