Emory freshman Hannah Lilly led four double-figure scorers with 22
points in helping the Eagles to a hard-fought 79-77 win at Piedmont
College on Saturday. With the win, Emory boosted its overall
record to 4-3 while the Lions slipped to 3-3.
Lilly hit eight-of-12 from the field, including all four
three-point opportunities, in racking up her fifth double-figure
scoring effort of the year and second of 20 or more points.
Also scoring in double figures for the Eagles, who posted their
first win on the road in three attempts this season, were freshmen
Savannah Morgan and Taylor Bruzzio and senior Courtney Von Stein,
all of whom totaled 10 points. Von Stein scored the
team's final five points of the game, including a dramatic
triple with 38 seconds left that snapped a 74-74 deadlock.
After Piedmont missed a three-point attempt, Emory got the rebound
and added its final two points of the game with Von Stein knocking
down a pair of free throws with 10 ticks left.
Emory outshot the hosts from the field, sinking 41.4 percent
(29-of-70) of its attempts with Piedmont checking in with a 38.5
percent mark. Both squads had their long-range shooting
skills in focus with Emory hitting 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from
beyond the arc and Piedmont 50 percent (7-of-14). The Eagles
recorded a 46-42 advantage in rebounding and were paced in that
department by sophomore Danielle Landry who came away with nine
boards.
Emory trailed by as many as nine points on two occasions in the
first half and faced a seven-point deficit, 23-16, with 9:37 left
in the stanza. The Eagles then rattled off a 12-1 run, with
Lilly scoring five of those points, to take a 28-24 lead with 5:16
on the clock. After a trey by Amber Satterfield, who led all
players with 26 points, drew the Lions to within one, Emory jumped
on the Lions with a 10-0 outburst, with Lilly hitting two treys in
the onslaught, which gave it a 38-27 advantage. Eventually,
the Eagles enjoyed a 41-32 cushion at the intermission.
Emory led by a 49-41 count early in the second half but a 10-1
Piedmont charged knotted the affair up, 51-51. Baskets by
Landry, Morgan and Bruzzio upped Emory's lead back to six
points, but the Lions scored 10 of the game's next 11 points
to jump ahead by a 61-58 margin with 10:54 left. From that
point, the game was a nip-and-tuck affair with a total of nine lead
changes. Piedmont took a 74-72 lead with 2:32 left following
a jumper by Lauren Hamel but Morgan, who scored all 10 of her
points in the second half, hit a big jumper that tied it with 1:38
on the clock and setting the stage for Von Stein's trey a
minute later.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday (Dec. 7) when they host
Spelman College in a 6:00 p.m. start.
