The Emory women's basketball team saw a four-game winning streak
come to an end this evening as it came out on the short end of a
home University Athletic Association game to Carnegie Mellon
University. The Tartans of CMU raised their overall record to
8-4 (1-0 UAA) following a 56-47 win over Emory who slipped to 6-5
(1-1 UAA).
The ice-cold conditions that hit the Atlanta area found
its way into the Emory shooting strokes as it was hindered by poor
field goal shooting throughout the evening, finishing the game with
a 20.3 percent mark (13-of-64) from the floor while the visitors
hit on 42.3 percent (22-of-52). The Eagles did manage to come
up with a season-high tying 14 steals as CMU turned the ball over
38 times but that was negated somewhat by the Tartans' decisive
57-30 bulge in rebounding.
Sophomore Becca Feldman led Emory with 12 points while senior
Whitney Martin rounded out the team's double-figure scorers with 10
points. Freshman Danielle Landry came off the bench and paced
the club with six rebounds and three steals.
A 14-6 run over a seven-minute stretch by CMU helped it to a 22-12
lead midway through the first half and the Tartans were able to
protect that margin and build on it in claiming a 33-21 edge at
halftime. Sophomore Jennifer Larsen scored 15 of her
game-high 26 points during the opening 20 minutes of action,
hitting seven-of-eight from the floor.
Emory trailed by 11 points, 37-26, with 14:35 left in the contest
before it staged a 7-0 spurt, keyed by a three-point field goal by
Melinh Rozen, and baskets by Martin and Keenan Whitesides, to draw
to within four points with 12:39 on the clock. However, that
would be as close as the Eagles would get as they went scoreless
for the following six minutes while CMU countered with an 11 -0 run
to take a 15-point advantage.
Emory returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 10) when it hosts Case
Western Reserve in a 2:00 p.m. start.
