Emory Women's Basketball Storms Back To Win At Brandeis

Box

Emory  junior Courtney Von Stein scored a career-high 18 points and senior Keenan Whitesides added 16 points and seven rebounds in helping the Eagles to a come-from-behind win at Brandeis University Sunday afternoon.  Emory raised its overall slate to 9-7, 2-3 in the University Athletic Association following a 73-65 win over the Judges who fell to 9-6 overall, 2-3 in the UAA.

Von Stein was successful on five-of-seven from the field, including five-of-six from three-point range, and converted three free throws en route to her third double-figure scoring game of the campaign.  Von Stein picked up 12 points during the second half in helping Emory to a decisive 49-30 scoring advantage over Brandeis.

Emory ended the contest shooting 39.3 percent from the field (24-of-61) and made the most of its three-point attempts, knocking down 11-of-22.  The Eagles' 11 treys tied the second-highest game total in school history.  Brandeis sank 33.3 percent (19-of-57) of its floor attempts and was successful on eight-of-25 from beyond the arc. The Judges held a 43-35 edge in rebounding but turned the ball over 18 times compared to 13 Emory miscues.  The Eagles totaled 24 points off Brandeis mistakes while the Judges picked up 13 points off Emory turnovers.

The Eagles trailed by 11 points with a little less than 12 minutes in the game and still faced a nine-point obstacle, 57-48, with 5:43 left. Emory then went on an astounding 20-1 blitz, keyed by four three-point field goals -- two from Von Stein and one apiece by sophomore Sally Peterson and Whitesides -- to assume a 68-58 lead with 59 ticks on the clock.

Brandeis held a 35-24 edge at halftime after hitting 37.9 percent from the floor while the Eagles connected at a 29.0 percent clip (9-of-31).  Both squads actually shot better from three-point range with Emory hitting 36.3 percent (4-of-11) while the host Judges sank 41.7 from distance (5-of-12).  Von Stein and Keenan Whitesides each picked up six points apiece to lead the Emory scoring attack.  Morgan Kendrew topped the Brandeis attack with 12 points and six boards.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Jan. 29) when it hosts the University of Chicago in a 6:00 p.m. start.
