Case Western Reserve freshman Evy Iacono scored 15 of her game-high
18 points in the second half in helping the Spartans rally for a
win over the Emory Sunday afternoon. The Spartans of Case
raised their overall record to 10-3, 1-1 in the University Athletic
Association, following a 64-55 decision over the Eagles who slipped
to 6-6, 1-2 in the league.
Emory outshot the visitors from the floor, 45.5 percent (20-of-44)
to 32.0 percent (16-of-50), but Case made negated that by knocking
down nine-of-23 three-point field goal attempts while Emory
converted just one of nine opportunities from beyond the arc.
CWRU also enjoyed a decided edge at the foul line, sinking 23-of-32
while Emory finished with 14 makes in 19 attempts.
Leading Emory in scoring was junior Courtney Von Stein with a
season-high 12 points. Von Stein hit six-of-eight from the
floor and also contributed five rebounds. Sophomore Becca
Feldman was the other Eagle to notch double digits with 11
points. Freshman Danielle Landry tied for game honors with
seven rebounds.
Emory got off to a quick start, using a 15-2 run early in the
contest to stake itself to a 15-4 lead with a little under 14
minutes left in the first half. Shooting 52.4 percent from
the field during the first 20 minutes of play, and using seven
points from Feldman and five from junior Liz Brandt, Emory posted a
31-24 edge at the intermission.
Case stayed within striking distance early in the second half and
snuck ahead, 41-37, with 10:32 on the clock as it capitalized on
some cold field goal shooting by the Eagles that saw them hit just
one of their first 10 field goal attempts while turning the ball
over on nine occasions. Emory fought back to knot the
contest, 43-43, with 6:56 remaining. However, back-to-back
treys by Iacono gave the Spartans a six-point cushion and they
would not surrender the lead the rest of the afternoon. A bucket by
Von Stein narrowed the gap to two points with 5:05 on the clock but
a 6-0 Case spurt pushed its advantage to eight points with 3:12
remaining. Down by 10 points, 59-49, Emory mounted one last
comeback bid when Von Stein hit back-to-back baskets to make the
score 59-53 in Case's favor with just over a minute left. But
that was as close as Emory would get the rest of the day.
Emory returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 14) when it plays host to
Piedmont College in a 6:00 p.m. tip.
