Emory senior Whitney Martin scored a career-high 19 points and the
Eagles turned in their best defensive effort of the campaign in
registering a win over the University of Rochester in the
University Athletic Association opener for both teams. Emory
improved to 3-4 on the season following a 60-50 win over the
Yellowjackets who slipped to 4-2.
Martin sank six-of-10 from the floor and six free throws en route
to notching her fourth straight and sixth double-figure scoring
effort of the season. Martin also paced all players with nine
rebounds. Sophomore Becca Feldman was the other Emory player
to finish in double digits with 12 points.
Emory ended the game shooting 36.7 percent from the floor while
limiting the Yellowjackets to 31.6 percent (18-of-57). While
Rochester enjoyed a hefty 45-31 advantage on the glass, Emory's
relentless defense forced 27 opponent turnovers which it turned
into 17 points.
Rochester held a 14-8 lead with 9:14 left in the opening stanza but
scored only four points the rest of the frame as Emory regrouped to
claim a 25-18 advantage at halftime. Emory was the
beneficiary of 19 Rochester turnovers in the opening 20 minutes of
play as its defensive effort held the visitors to just 25.0 percent
from the field.
The Eagles took its biggest lead of the afternoon with 16:23 left
in the contest when a three-point field goal by Martin pushed Emory
ahead by a 30-20 margin. The Yellowjackets drew to within
five points with 12:03 on the clock, but a 7-1 Emory spurt, keyed
by a pair of buckets by senior Keenan Whitesides and triple by
Feldman boosted the Eagles cushion to 11 points with 9:26
left. Rochester battled back 46-43 with 3:55 remaining
following a Jodie Luther layup, but Emory iced the game with a
decisive 10-1 explosion, that started with a three-pointer by
sophomore Melinh Rozen, giving the home squad a 56-44 bulge
with less than a minute remaining. Rozen turned in a strong effort
off the bench with nine points and one assist in 19 minutes.
Emory returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 8, when it plays at
Spelman.
