Women's Track and Field Ends Day 1 of UAA Outdoor Championships in 1st Place

The Emory women's track and field team dominated the first day of the UAA Outdoor Championships, ending day one in first place with 77 points.

The day was highlighted by Abigail Roberts' win in the hammer throw, throwing for 53.53m to secure the UAA championship. Day one also saw Elizabeth Csikai break the 10,000m record, finishing in sixth with a 36:36.15 to break the record previously set by Melissa Jones in 2009.

Freshman Ayla Cooke finished behind Csikai in the 10,000m to start the day, finishing in 14th with a time of 39:03.88.

The 3000m steeplechase saw a pair of PRs from Cameron Gupta and Davis Johnson as Gupta earned second place with a time of 10:44.24 and Johnson took fifth at 10:52.79.

In the 4x800 relay, the team of Payton Fleming, Sarah Nixon, Zoe Norman and Hannah Riley took third with a time of 9:10.77.

Up next was the 100m hurdles prelim where freshman Kelsey Coley led the field with a 14.37 second performance to qualify for tomorrow's final. Her classmates Megan Taylor and Campbell Fennell also qualified for finals, finishing third and fourth at 15.26 and 15.60 seconds as Taylor ran her PR.

In the 400m prelim, Amaya Grant and Hannah Riley each qualified for finals as they placed 6th and 8th with times over the 58 second mark.

The 100m dash prelim saw Jada Kenner and Anna Jennings place in the top eight, with Kenner taking second at 12.02 seconds and Jennings finishing in eighth at 12.65 seconds.

In the 800m prelim, Aaliyah Jalloh ran a personal best at 2:12.41 to place second and qualify for finals. Madison Tiaffay and Payton Sullivan also qualified as Tiaffay came in fifth at 2:13.77 and Sullivan ran her PR at 2:14.76 to place seventh.

The 400m hurdle prelim was up next where Coley placed first with a time of 1:05.01 to automatically qualify for tomorrow's final. Sophia Deeney and Taylor also qualified as Deeney took fifth at 1:05.01 to earn her PR while Taylor ran for 1:07.39 to take sixth.

In the 200m prelim, Kenner was the lone qualifier as she placed sixth with a time of 25.47 seconds.

Moving over to the field events, freshman Caroline Henry came in second behind Roberts in the hammer throw with a 50.50m effort.

In the long jump, Anna Jennings took third at 5.55m and Taylor took fourth with a 5.47m jump.

The day ended with the shot put where all four Eagles placed in the top ten. Jeanette Hydukovich came in second at 12.54m while Henry joined her on the podium in third with an 11.70m performance. Janelle Bobb came in 5th at 11.38m while Jackie Chapman rounded out the top ten with a 10.75m throw.

The team will compete in the finals tomorrow, with events beginning at 9:00 a.m.
