Geller, Goldstick Lift Emory Baseball Past Middlebury, 8-4, in Series Finale

The Emory University baseball team picked up the series clinching win over Middlebury College Sunday morning as the Eagles defeated the Panthers, 8-4, in the weekend finale at Chappell Park.

Senior Adam Geller was flawless across seven frames as he allowed one earned run and struck out nine for his third win of the season. Junior Corey Goldstick had a career day at the plate, driving in a personal best five runs to power the offense.

The Eagles set the tone early by taking advantage of a leadoff error to send home four runs as Emory batted around in the first. Freshman Dalton Needle started the scoring with a bases loaded walk before Goldstick drove home a pair with a single later in the inning.

Middlebury forced across its lone run against Geller with a RBI triple from Alexander Glasscock in the second before the Emory right-handed posted zeroes over the remainder of his outing.

A one-out triple from Saturday's hero Mitchell Smallwood helped the Eagles score their fifth run as Goldstick singled him home in the next plate appearance. The lead would extend to 7-1 in the fifth with Goldstick added another RBI to his total with a sacrifice fly and junior Jake Lawson bringing in Smallwood with an infield bunt single.

Goldstick recorded another sac fly in the seventh inning to grow the Emory lead to seven before Middlebury began its rally in the late frames.

The Panthers notched two runs in the eighth and threatened for more in the ninth as they loaded the bases with no one out. Senior Paul Fine picked up a much needed 6-4-3 double play before striking out Glenn Parker for the final out to extinguish the rally and clinch the series for the Eagles.

Emory will be back at Chappell Park on Wednesday with a single game against visiting Wabash College. First pitch in Atlanta is set for 2:00 PM.
