Emory University baseball team fell behind early and could not complete the comeback as Piedmont University took the weekend finale, 12-7, Sunday afternoon at Loudermilk Field in Demorest, Georgia.
The Lions jumped out to a 10-1 lead through two innings to win the rubber game between the two Georgia-based schools. With the win, Piedmont moves to 14-8 while Emory drops to 11-8 on the season.
Emory found itself in a quick 3-0 hole as Piedmont scored early in its half of the first inning. The Eagles responded with a RBI groundout from graduate student Mark Serdinak in the top of the first but the Lions continued the offensive pressure with seven-run second frame including a grand slam off the bat of Davin Miller.
The Eagles struck for three in the fourth by taking advantage of two Piedmont errors to plate three unanswered runs. Emory then brought the score to 10-6 with a Zach Wasserlauf two-run double in the fifth.
After the Lions tacked on two more in their fifth frame, the Eagles were held off the scoreboard until the ninth when junior Jake Lawson belted a solo home run but could not extend the rally.
Emory will now turn its attention to conference play as the UAA slate begins on Friday with the weekend opener against NYU. First pitch in New York is set for 3:00 PM on Friday, March 27.
