The Emory track and field team kicked off the outdoor season at home Friday on day one of the Emory Spring Break Classic, earning 26 top ten finishes on the day.
The Eagles earned three first place wins on day one, with
Ryan Van de Berghe starting things off as he won the men's 1500m with a time of 3:53.18. On the women's side, sophomore
Abigail Roberts won the hammer throw with a 51.36m throw. Classmate
Davis Johnson earned her first-place win in the 3000m steeplechase, putting up a time of 11:17.87 in her first steeplechase of the season.
Starting the day in the men's field events, sophomore
Ari Klasky took seventh in the hammer throw with his 49.25m effort. Junior
Tyler Edwards also earned a top ten spot, placing ninth with a 48.06m throw. Sophomore
Riley Schwimmer found his way into the top 30 to wrap up the event, taking 23
rd with a 40.84m mark.
In the javelin, senior
Chris Summey took 12
th with a 46.30m throw and sophomore
Alexander Osterman threw for 43.87m to place 15
th.
The triple jump was up next and sophomore
Jason Bright led the Eagles, placing fourth with a 14.37m jump. Classmate
Sam Gouvalaris was close behind, taking sixth with a 14.12m mark. Fellow sophomore
Ryan Coleman also placed in the top 15, jumping 13.22m to come in 15
th place.
Finishing off the men's field events was the high jump where sophomore
Kevin Zhong earned fourth place with a 1.90m jump. Rookie
Jacob Kim also placed in the top 15, taking 13
th with a 1.85m effort.
The track side of the men's competition began with the 400m hurdles where
Ethan Lu led the team, placing fifth with a time of 54.08. Junior
Sebastian Kou came in next, running a 55.37 to take 12
th. Freshman
Noah Chang finished off the event, coming in 14
th with his 55.54 second performance.
In the 200m, sophomore
Ryan McGonigle was the lone Eagle and took 41
st after his 22.53 second race.
Following Van de Berghe in the 1500m was sophomore
Dalton Lowery who came in 11
th with a 4:01.42. Senior
Nikhil Makker came in next, running a 4:02.80 to finish in 16
th. Rounding out the Eagles in the top 20 was
Carsen Valenta as he finished in 18
th with a 4:03.15 performance.
In the 3000m steeplechase, all three freshman Eagles competing placed in the top ten.
Zach Glover got it started with a 10:03.20 to come in 5
th.
Logan Clark followed him in, placing sixth with his time of 10:14.10.
Shane Larkin wrapped up the event, earning 8
th with a 10:22.19 effort.
In the 4x400 relay, the Emory A group of
Blake Jackson,
Cooper Harwood,
Eli Rosen and
Lucas Mersky took 4
th with a time of 3:18.93. The second group from Emory with Lu,
Michael Miller,
Rohan Dharmarajan and
Jack Tsai came in tenth with a 3:28.61 finish.
Rounding out the men's side of competition was the 5000m where senior
Lucas Moskovitz placed 12
th with a time of 15:18.62.
The women's field events began with Roberts' win in the hammer throw followed by a second-place finish from
Caroline Henry after her 50.42m throw.
Janelle Bobb also finished in the top 15, throwing for 39.99m to place 14
th.
In the javelin, junior
Mable Mutumwa took third with a 38.43m effort. Freshmen
Grace Sharman and
Lucy Hewitt also placed in the top ten, taking 8
th and 10
th respectively.
In the triple jump, sophomore
Amaya Grant took fourth with an 11.43m jump and freshman
Mimi Rhee took tenth with her 10.67m performance.
Finishing the field events with the high jump,
Gabrielle An was the lone Eagle in the field and took tenth with a 1.50m high jump.
Starting the women's track events with the 400m hurdles, sophomore
Izzie Thompson placed 19
th with a time of 1:08.58.
Ryleigh O'Donnell came in a few seconds later just after the 1:11 mark to take 26
th.
In the 1500m, senior
Madison Tiaffay took second place with a time of 4:37.23. Junior
Payton Fleming was close behind, taking third as she crossed at the 4:42.76 mark. Classmate
Elise Picard finished next, finishing in fourth with a time of 4:48.05. Senior
Luna McCauley rounded out the top ten for the Eagles, placing 8
th with a time of 4:52.62.
In the 3000m steeplechase,
Cameron Gupta joined Johnson on the podium as she took second with an 11:29.89 performance.
The final event of the day was the 4x400m relay where
Kwilai Karto,
Sophia Deeney,
Izzie Thompson and
Sarah Nixon took fifth place with a time of 4:04.35.
The Eagles will begin the second day of competition at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.
