The Emory men's track and field team had a fantastic showing on day one of the UAA Indoor Championships, boasting two UAA champions and two additional All-UAA selections on the day.
The Eagles are currently in second place with 38 points, trailing Chicago who is in the lead with 57 points. Carnegie Mellon rounds out the top three, going into day two with 32 points.
Starting with the long jump, senior standout
Henry Brandstadter secured the UAA Championship with his 7.08m effort. Rookie
Marco Souchet also claimed a spot in the top ten, taking eighth with a 6.42m mark.
In the weight throw, sophomore
Ari Klasky earned All-UAA honors, earning third place with his 15.82m throw. Junior
Tyler Edwards also placed in the top ten, taking tenth with his 14.14m mark.
Brandstadter found more success in the high jump, earning another All-UAA selection with his 1.98m jump to claim second place. Underclassmen
Jacob Kim and
Sam Gouvalaris also earned top ten spots, taking sixth and ninth place respectively.
Rounding out finals was the men's 4000m distance medley relay, the team won the UAA Championship, running a 9:55.04 to earn the new eighth fastest time in Division III.
Sophomore
Ben Olvey got track prelims off to a fantastic start as he automatically qualifed for the 60mH finals with an 8.36 to take second place. Classmate
Ethan Lu and rookie
Noah Chang also qualified for tomorrows finals, running an 8.38 and an 8.41 respectively.
In the 400m, freshmen
Lucas Mersky and
Blake Jackson qualified for finals in heat three with times of 50.58 and 50.85.Â
Brandstadter was the lone automatic qualifier for the Eagles in the 60m, running a 6.87 to take first place in prelims.Â
Emory also led the pack in the 800m prelim, with sophomore
Ryan McGonigle taking first in the prelim with a time of 1:54.25 to automatically qualify for tomorrows final. Senior
Brendan Conniff and junior
Andrew Burchett also qualified for the final with Conniff clocking in at 1:54.85 and Burchett coming in less than a second later.Â
Finishing things off in the 200m prelim, Brandstadter led the Eagles with a 22.29 effort to claim a spot in the final, with Chang coming in .40 seconds later to secure his spot.Â
The final day of the UAA Championships will begin tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.Â
