#23 Women's Basketball Conquers UChicago 61-52 in Sunday Showdown

The Eagles picked up their third conference win of the season vs. the Maroons.

The #23 Emory women's basketball team took down UAA foe #17 UChicago in a statement win on Sunday, beating the Maroons 61-52 and earning their third conference win of the season following their loss to the Maroons on the road last week.

The win was highlighted by another career-defining performance from rookie Tatum Olson as she put up 20 points and six rebounds against the Maroons. Alexandra Loucopoulos also found herself in double digits with 13 points on the day and senior Lily Kennedy kept the Eagles in the game on defense with nine rebounds.

The game was back and forth from the start as UChicago put up the first few points to take the lead, but the Eagles answered with back-to-back driving layups from Loucopoulos to tie it at 6-6 halfway through the first quarter. The lead kept shifting throughout the period as Olson's three pointer with three minutes left gave the Eagles the edge, but the Maroons immediately responded with a three from Chris Sanders and a pair of made free throws from Kasi Samuda put UChicago up by two with 1:44 to go. As the clock ran down in the quarter, Caroline Connelly's clutch shot from beyond the arc gave Emory the lead going into the second quarter.

The second quarter started just like the first as UChicago got the opening points, but Olson and Mia Strazza responded with a pair of field goals to keep the Eagles in the lead. That didn't keep the Maroons down for long as a three pointer from Caroline Workman put them in the lead, but Strazza answered with a three pointer of her own to put the score at 27-25. It was a battle for the lead the whole way as it kept shifting from the Maroons to the Eagles, but the Maroons went on a 6-0 run at the end of the half to extend their lead to 36-29.

Coming out of halftime, the Eagles started strong as Connelly got the opening layup to shrink UChicago's lead. The Maroons held onto it until the last two minutes of the quarter as junior Mary Mullinax got the layup and Olson shot two good free throws to put the Eagles up 40-38. From then on it was the Emory show as a pair of free throws from Mullinax and a turnaround jumper from junior Emma Starr put the Eagles up 44-40 going into the final ten minutes.

The Eagles held onto their lead for the rest of the final quarter, despite efforts from UChicago as they scored the first field goal of the quarter. A layup from UChicago's Annabelle Spotts brought the game to 46-46, but the Eagles kept their momentum going as a jumper from Loucopoulos and another three from Strazza helped keep Emory ahead. The Maroons tried to respond with back-to-back driving layups, but a pull up three from Olson kept the Eagles out in front as the clock ran down as the Maroons didn't score a single point in the last two minutes of the game. The Sunday matinee ended with Loucopoulos making two pairs of free throws to bring the score to 61-52 as the Eagles beat the Maroons exactly one week after losing to them on the road.

The Eagles will be back in the WPEC next weekend for the second half of a four-game homestand as they take on Brandeis Friday night and #1 NYU Sunday afternoon.
