Emory's track and field team had an incredible day at the UAB Invite, earning 32 top 15 finishes amongst a crowded field in Birmingham that included Division I and II teams.
The meet was highlighted by
Ryan McGonigle's program record-breaking performance in the men's 600m, earning second place with a time of 1:19.11. wins in the women's 800m and the men's 3000m as juniors
Payton Fleming and
John Urciuoli each secured first place and their PRs. The Eagles also found success in men's and women's pole vault as
Erin Makhanian took second place and senior
Steven Ditelberg took third.
Starting strong on the women's side with the track events, junior
Elizabeth Csikai and sophomore
Davis Johnson placed second and third respectively in the women's 5000m, with Csikai coming in at 18:11.57 and Johnson at 18:18.37.
In the one mile, senior
Madison Tiaffay placed third with a time of 5:05.91. Freshman
Ayla Cooke also found herself in the top 15, crossing the finish line at the 5:20 mark to place 13
th overall.
The 600m came next and rookieÂ
Zoë Norman came in fifth place, earning the new 24
th best time in Division III with her time of 1:38.29. Underclassmen
Ryleigh O'Donnell and
Sarah Nixon also made the top 20, coming in at 1:43 and 1:47.
Up next was the 400m where sophomore
Aaliyah Jalloh led the Eagles, finishing at the 57.85 second mark to place in the top 15. Junior
Hannah Riley came in next, crossing about two seconds later at 59.09 to earn her spot in the top 25.
Laura Jablonover quickly followed, finishing .3 seconds later to earn 28
th overall.
In the 60m, freshman
Kwilai Karto led the team with her 8.16 time to finish 44
th. Fellow rookies
Kelsey Coley and
Campbell Fennell followed suit as they crossed the finish line at the 8.28 and 8.47 marks respectively.
Next up was the 60m hurdles, Fennell placed in the top 20 with a time of 9.32, marking the new 87
th best time in Division III. Koley came in shortly after, earning a top 30 spot with her 10.13 mark.
In the women's 800m, Fleming got the Eagles' first win of the day, racing her PR with a time of 2:16.27. Classmate
Elise Picard and senior
Payton Sullivan also found themselves in the top 15, coming in at 2:22 and 2:26.
Following that was the 200m,
Amaya Grant led the team, placing in the top 30 with her time of 25.67 and earning the new 64
th fastest time in Division III. Taylor was close behind, placing 40
th after crossing the finish at the 26.26 mark. Karto was the final Eagle to cross the finish in the event, coming in at 27.62 to place 53
rd overall.
In the 3000m, sophomore
Arden Gray ran a 10:57.28, securing her PR and a spot in the top 15 as the only Eagle in the event.
Rounding out the women's track events was the 4x400m relay where Emory took eighth with a time of 3:58.95.
The women's field events began with the shot put where sophomore
Jeanette Hydukovich led the team with an 11.52m throw to land in 14
th place. Freshman
Caroline Henry also earned a top 15 spot with a 10.99m mark while sophomore
Janelle Bobb came in 31
st overall with her 9.36m throw.
In the long jump, the freshman duo of
Mimi Rhee and
Megan Taylor both placed inside the top 30, with Rhee coming in 16
th with a 4.92m jump and Taylor placing 28
th with her 4.54m effort.
The pole vault was up next and Makhanian had a fantastic performance, putting up a 3.77m mark to place second overall and earning the 17
th best mark in Division III. Fellow sophomore
Emerson Sobich also placed in the top 15 with her 3.02m mark.
In the triple jump, the rookie duo of Rhee and Taylor held it down for the Eagles once again as Rhee took 16
th with a 4.92m jump and Taylor took 28
th with a 4.54 jump.
The women's weight throw saw another top 15 finish from Henry as she had a 14.69m throw. Sophomore
Abigail Roberts followed suit, securing a spot in the top 20 with a 13.67m throw. Rounding things out for the Eagles was fellow sophomore
Sarah Watson who had an 11.90m throw to earn 32
nd place.
The freshmen held it down for the Eagles in the women's high jump as
Gabrielle An placed 13
th with her 1.50m jump and
Maeve Hurly made the top 20 with her 1.40m mark.
The men's track competition also began with the 5000m as freshman
Reid Dalley and senior
Lucas Moskovitz claimed fourth and fifth overall, coming in just after the 15:28 mark. Rookie
Shane Larkin also earned a spot in the top 15 with his time of 16:26.42.
In the men's one mile, the senior-freshman duo of
Nikhil Makker and
Zach Glover took 13
th and 14
th overall, finishing just after the 4:27 mark. Sophomore
Carsen Valenta also joined them in the top 20 with his time of 4:30.84.
The 600m was up next and Emory shined as McGonigle placed second overall with his time of 1:19.11, also earning the second fastest time in all of Division III. Teammate
Brendan Conniff joined him in the top five, crossing the finish just over a second later to land in fifth place.
Emory had a freshman trio on the track for the men's 400m as
Lucas Mersky led the Eagles with his 50.77 mark, earning 26
th overall.
Cooper Harwood came in next, finishing at 51.51 to find himself in 34
th place.
Eli Rosen rounded things out for Emory in the 400m, claiming 41
st overall and a PR for this 52-second effort.
That was followed by the 60m,
Henry Brandstadter led the team with his 11
th place finish, racing a 6.90 to mark the new 38
th best time in Division III. Sophomore
Joshua Han also raced his PR as he came in at 7.31 and teammate
Noah Chang came in .1 second later.
The men's 60m hurdles was up next which saw Chang tie for 14
th to earn a new PR with his 8.50 time and sophomore
Ethan Lu come in .1 second later to come in 16
th place.
In the 800m, junior
Andrew Burchett placed in the top 10 with his time of 1:57.28. Coming in shortly after was the freshmen duo of
Michael Versaci and
Krish Bhaskaran, who came in 16
th and 19
th place with times just over the 1:58 mark.
The 200m followed and Mersky found himself in 31
st place, crossing the finish line at 22.57.
Blake Jackson came in less than a second later to earn his PR and 44
th place. Rounding things out for the Eagles was Lu who came in 50
th overall with a time of 23.15.
In the 3000m, Urciuoli secured the Eagles second win of the day, running his PR with a time of 8:24.86.
Ryan Van de Berghe joined his teammate in the top three, taking second overall and running his PR with a time of 8:30.93.
Dalton Lowery followed suit with his top ten placement, coming in at 8:50.34. Freshman
Logan Clark also ran his PR, landing in 16
th place with a time of 9:02.05 and junior
Kirin Karver came in shortly after to finish in 19
th. Â
Rounding out the men's track events was the 4x400m relay where the Eagles took 12
th overall in a field of 20 teams, posting a time of 3:29.44.
Kicking off the men's field events with shotput,
Ari Klasky put on a show as he took third place with a 16.39m mark. Junior
Rohan Vasandani also claimed a spot in the top 30 with his 11.50m throw.
In the long jump, sophomore
Jason Bright held it down for the Eagles as he placed 16
th with his 6.16m jump.
Men's weight throw saw dominance from Klasky once again as he placed in the top 15 with a 15.11m throw.
Triple jump followed and Emory earned two more top 15 placements as
Sam Gouvalaris and
Marco Souchet each placed in the top 15 with a 13.60m and 13.08m jump respectively.
Pole vault was up next and both Eagles placed in the top ten as Ditelberg took third place with a 4.50 mark and
Robert Bright earned tenth place with a 4.20m effort.
Ending the meet with the men's high jump, Brandstadter was the lone Eagle as he placed 13
th overall with his 1.89m jump.
Emory will be back on the track next weekend for the Centre College Invitational in Danville, KY.
