Senior Josh Zuckerman spun a seven-inning complete game shutout Friday afternoon as the Emory University baseball team won its fifth consecutive game with a 12-0 mercy-rule win in the first game of the weekend series against Covenant College on Lookout Mountain.
Zuckerman was flawless to earn his first decision of the season as he scattered two hits and two walks over seven innings of work. He struck out 11 of the 26 batters he faced in the outing.
Junior Jonathan Lang supplied all the offense Zuckerman would need with his three-run bomb in the top of the first inning and the Eagles' offense continued to roll with another three spot in the second, highlighted by a two-run double from senior Adrien Armstrong.
The score remained 6-0 until the sixth when juniors Jake Lawson and Zach Hanson ramped up the scoring with back-to-back doubles to plate three runs. The next inning, Lawson and Corey Goldstick added to the Emory cause as the Eagles notched their fourth three-run frame of the afternoon en route to the run-rule victory.
Lawson, Lang and Armstrong combined to drive in nine of the team's 12 runs with the team recording six extra-base hits over the course of the seven innings.
The Eagles and Scots will make the trek to Atlanta on Saturday to conclude the weekend set with a doubleheader at Chappell Park. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
