Softball Sweeps LaGrange in First Road Doubleheader of the Season

The Eagles are now on a 4-0 win streak to start the season.

The Emory Softball team went south to take on LaGrange in a Sunday doubleheader, sweeping the Panthers to start the season 4-0 as the Eagles took game one 10-3 and game two 6-1.

Game 1: Emory 10, LaGrange 3

The Eagles got off to a hot start in the first inning with a single from senior Ashley Chu on the first at bat of the game. Chu would go on to steal second and sophomore Megan Sutton kept the momentum going with an RBI that sent Chu home to make it 1-0. Later in the half inning, Lily Ware hit a sac fly to bring Sutton home and bring the score to 2-0. LaGrange had a chance to respond in their half of the inning and delivered as a pair of RBIs from the Panthers tied the game at 2-2 going into the second.

After a scoreless second inning, a pair of singles from senior Ella Hoyle and junior Ellie Zerr gave the Eagles a good field position and Ware reached first on a fielding error, sending Zerr home to make it 3-2. The Panthers tried to respond but didn't tie it up in the bottom of the third.

The fourth inning went scoreless on both sides and the Eagles didn't find the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, but an unearned run from the Panthers brought the score to 3-3 to end the fifth.

The Eagles bounced back in the sixth inning with a wild play as junior Grace Cooper reached third on a throwing error by the second baseman with bases loaded, sending Chu, junior Ella Janish and rookie Olivia Kohler home to make it 6-3. That energy continued with the next at bat as a two-run home run from Zerr gave the Eagles the 8-3 lead going into the bottom of the inning, with the Panthers unable to respond.

The bats stayed hot for the Eagles in the final inning as a single up the middle from Cooper sent freshman Radha Samuel and Janish home to extend their lead to 10-3. The Emory defense got it done in the bottom of the seventh and kept the Panthers from home plate, earning their third win of the season in another 10-run win.

Game 2: Emory 6, LaGrange 1

The second game of the doubleheader started off slow on both sides, going scoreless through the first three innings. The Eagles would get the first runs on the board in the top of the fourth as a single from Janish brought Kohler across home plate to make it 1-0. Junior Abby Wylie kept it going on the next at bat with another single to send Janish home to extend the lead to 2-0, with the Panthers remaining runless in the bottom of the fourth.

At the top of the fifth, Zerr got her second home run of the day bring the score to 3-0. Rookie Alejandra Wittman joined in on the fun, hitting a home run of her own to make the score 4-0. The Panthers would score their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth on a single to third base, making the score 4-1.

Both teams went scoreless in the sixth, but Emory would extend its lead in the top of the seventh as a single from Hoyle would send freshman Gabriela Oceguera home on an RBI to extend the lead to 5-1. On the next at bat, Ware would line out and Zerr would score an unearned run on a throwing error to make the final score 6-1 as the Panthers did not respond in the bottom of the seventh.
