Despite a career-high 21 points from junior Mary Mullinax, the No. 18 ranked Emory University women's basketball team could not secure the road win at No. 15 ranked WashU Friday night falling to the Bears 67-56 in St. Louis.
Mullinax and freshman Tatum Olson combined for 31 points in the defeat as the Eagles slip to 12-4 on the season and 2-3 inside UAA competition. WashU was highlighted by a game-high 28 points from Lexi Harris to improve to 4-2 in UAA action and 13-4 overall. Mullinax shot 8-for-12 from the floor including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc and added a team-leading eight rebounds. Olson chipped in with seven boards and a team-best three steals.
Hot shooting in the opening quarter by Mullinax helped the Eagles gain an early edge as the junior netted nine points to boost Emory to a 20-14 lead through 10 minutes. The Bears bounced back in the second by outscoring the Eagles 16-10 in the frame to level the score at 30-30 at the halftime break. Emory saw eight different players found the scoring column in the half, led by Mullinax's nine.
Mullinax regained her shooting stroke as the teams returned from the locker rooms as she scored 10 of the Eagles' 18 points in the third quarter as Emory kept pace with WashU and trailed by just one going into the fourth.
The difference in the game came from the Bears' start to the fourth as WashU outscored the Eagles 11-2 over the opening five minutes of the final quarter with a lone Mullinax basket accounting for the EU scoring. Olson and senior Katherine Martini helped trim the deficit to 62-54 with 2:28 remaining but the Bears countered with a 5-2 run to close out the game.
The Eagles will look to rebound on Sunday with another top- 20 matchup on the road. Tip off against No. 17 ranked UChicago is set for 1:00 PM ET in Chicago, Illinois.
