#2 Women's Soccer Upends Oglethorpe, 3-0, to Match Best Start in Team History

The No. 2 ranked Emory University women's soccer team claimed 404 bragging rights Tuesday night as the Eagles used three second half goals to upend crosstown foe Oglethorpe University, 3-0, at the WoodPEC.

In a matchup featuring two of the nine remaining undefeated teams among the Division III ranks, the Eagles were bolstered by second half scores from juniors Kaitlyn Nimmer and Katie Hungness to extend their winning streak to nine games. Emory, now standing at 9-0, joins the 2001 team as the only Eagle squads to start a season with nine straight wins.

Although the shot total rang 20-2 in favor of the home team through the first 45 minutes, the Eagles remained off the scoreboard despite forcing seven shots on frame as the teams went into the halftime break scoreless.

In the second half, Emory continued to mount pressure and finally broke through in the 50th minute as Nimmer scored on the team's 22nd shot attempt of the night. Graduate student Claudia Schmidt raced behind the Oglethorpe defensive unit on the left side before sending a centering pass to Nimmer inside the middle of the 18 where she finished with her left foot.

Nimmer was not finished on the evening as she added a second tally for the Eagles with another score in the 57th minute. Freshman Sophia Asiain had the initial shot attempt from close range but was denied by the Stormy Petrel keeper. The rebound found its way to Nimmer who was 25 yards out on the right side. Again, Nimmer used her left boot, only this time sent a rainbow shot to the back of the net over the leaping keeper's reach. The score was Nimmer's seventh of the season as well as her first brace of the campaign.

Emory's final goal came with just under 17 minutes left to play when Hungness found the back of the net for the second time in three games. Having just subbed into the game seconds before, Hungness stepped to corner flag. Her inswinger curled to the near post and off the Oglethorpe keeper for the score.

The Eagles will look to extend their winning streak when they take the field next on Saturday in a non-conference tilt at Sewanee.
