The Emory University volleyball continues their dominant start to the season taking back-to-back, 3-0 wins against St. Catherine University and Mississippi University for Women on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia.
The No. 5 ranked Eagles hold a 3-0 start to the season following the conclusion of the Jenny McDowell Invitational and will travel to Oshkosh, Wisconsin for the UW-Oshkosh Marty Petersen Invitational next week.
Game 1: Emory 3, St. Catherine 0
The Eagles dominated the first set against the Wildcats opening with a 7-2 run highlighted by kills from senior
Kaya Monrose. After advancing to a 9-4 lead, Emory took five straight points taking advantage of errors from St. Catherine's offense to take a 14-4 lead. The domination continued into the final points of the set and the Eagles took set one with a 25-10 line.
In set two, the Wildcats fought back holding a slight 6-5 lead over Emory before kills from seniors
Kate LaRocco and
Eliane Silberman gave the Eagles back a 10-8 advantage. St. Catherine didn't give up going point for point with Emory to take a 20-19 lead. Five kills from the Eagles' offense finished the set with a 6-2 run to take the second set, 25-22.
The first 18 points of the third set were back and forth between both programs but Emory pulled away with a 12-9 lead on back-to-back kills from Silberman. LaRocco and junior
Sophia Luo joined in to push the Eagles to an eight point lead towards the end of the set. The duo finished the set with four kills to clinch the match for Emory with a 25-16 score in set three.
Game 2: Emory 3, MUW 0
Similar to the previous game, the Owls went point-for-point with Emory in the opening set of game two before holding a 6-5 lead. The Eagles answered with a 5-2 run of their own followed by eight straight points, four straight service aces from junior
Jillian Massenat, to give Emory an 18-8 lead. MUW followed with a run of their own but it wasn't enough and the Eagles took set one, 25-15.
The offense party continued into the start of the second set as Emory pushed its way to an 11-5 lead. The next few points went back and forth between the two programs before the Eagles finished with an 8-2 run to win the second set 25-10.
MUW wasn't going down without a fight going toe-to-toe with Emory for a slight 5-4 deficit to start set three. Kills from junior
Gabija Staniskis and Luo kept the offensive momentum moving for the Eagles pushing them to a 16-8 lead followed by back-to-back kills from LaRocco. Emory finished with a 7-3 run to clinch their third straight win to start the season.
The Eagles will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday, September 5 at 5:30 PM EST in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
