The Emory University men's tennis team saw its season come to a close Monday afternoon, as the Eagles fell to Tufts University, 4-0, in the national quarterfinals played at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Claremont, California.
The Eagles conclude their season with an overall record of 17-7 while the Jumbos will advance to tomorrow's final four match where they'll take on either Denison or Johns Hopkins. Tufts proved to be strong competition for Emory on Monday as they secured the doubles point before taking the next three singles points in succession via straight sets.
In doubles, sophomore
Christian Liew and freshman
Ruilin Feng fought to a tiebreak on court one but the deciding points came from the additional courts where graduate student
Efe Comu and freshman
Ajay Kartik dropped a 4-6 setback and juniors
Dean Kamenev and
John Lasanajak faltered by a 3-6 line.
In singles, Comu, Kartik and Liew all snared first set wins in their matches as the Eagles tried to mount a comeback. However, the Jumbos notched straight set victories on court one over Kamenev (3-6, 4-6), court two over Feng (2-6, 1-6) and court six against Lasanajak (2-6, 3-6) to clinch the match.
When play concluded, Comu (7-5, 3-0) and Liew (7-5, 4-1) were on brinks of wins on courts three and four while Kartik was battling to a 6-4, 4-4 line on court five.
The Eagles will now turn their attention to the individual championships starting Friday where Comu and Feng are scheduled to represent the Eagles in singles while Feng and Liew will participate in doubles.
