After dropping the first three games of the series, the Emory University salvaged a win in the finale Sunday afternoon by taking down the Spartans of Case Western Reserve, 5-2, in Cleveland.
The Eagles were led by a pair of standout pitching performances as sophomore
JT Rattigan and senior
Bennett Speicher held CWRU to two runs on seven hits as the Eagles won their 18th game of the season.
Rattigan worked into the sixth inning to earn his second win of the season. He battled through the tough Spartans lineup, pitching around five hits and four walks to allow just two runs. He struck out one in the outing.
For Speicher, he notched his seventh save of the season as he tied a season-long 3.2 innings. He did not allow a run as he scattered two hits and three walks while punching out two batters.
At the plate, the key frame in Sunday's win came in the sixth as the Eagles claimed the lead with a three-run inning. Trailing 2-1 heading into the sixth, sophomore
Jake Lawson leveled the scoring with a double down the left field line. Seniors
Matthew Sicoli and
Jack Halloran were able to increase the Emory advantage with sac fly by Sicoli followed a run-scoring single by Halloran.
Halloran collected three of the Eagles' eight hits on the day and registered at least one RBI for the third game this weekend. Sunday's RBI brought Halloran's season total to a team-leading 40 as well as his career total to 156 as he moves closer to Ted Karniewicz's program record of 169 career RBI.
Emory will resume UAA competition next weekend with another weekend trip on the road. This time the Eagles will be headed to Waltham, Mass. to face the Brandeis Judges. Game one of the weekend slate is scheduled for 3:00 PM on Friday.
