The No. 5 ranked Emory men's tennis team wrapped up in the UAA Tournament on Sunday, taking on NYU in the third-place match. After falling in the semifinals match on Saturday, the Eagles bounced back with a convincing 4-0 win over the Violets to finish third in the UAA for the third consecutive season.
The doubles point did not come easy, with the final match coming down to the wire. NYU earned the first win of the afternoon, with graduate student
Efe Comu and freshman
Ajay Kartik dropping their match on court two, 2-6. Graduate student
Charley Force and junior
Dean Kamenev brought things level, though, earning a crucial, 7-5 victory on court three.
Freshman
Ruilin Feng and sophomore
Christian Liew were the last to finish up, playing in the top position. The match was a back-and-forth affair, with the two trading points until it came down to a tiebreaker. Needing a victory to secure the doubles point, the underclassmen dug in for a narrow, 7-6(6) win.
Liew was quick to extend the lead in singles, earning a swift, straight-set win on court four. His final line read 6-2, 6-0 to bring his record to 11-6 during his sophomore season. Another underclassmen added the third point for the Eagles, with Kartik taking a win on court six by a score of 6-2 and 6-1. Kartik is now 10-2 in singles play this year.
Ultimately, it was Force wrapping up the win for the Eagles on court five. He took the first set, 6-1, before finishing off the second, 6-3, to win the match and secure a third-place finish for the Eagles. The matches on courts one, two, and three were abandoned after the match was clinched.
This is the third consecutive year that the Eagles finished third at the UAA Tournament. Emory will now learn its postseason fate when the NCAA Tournament field is released on Monday, May 5
