The Emory University baseball program ran its winning streak to eight games Saturday afternoon as the Eagles came away with a pair wins over Covenant College up on Lookout Mountain, outscoring the Scots 24-6 to complete the sweep.
With the two wins, the Eagles' winning streak of eight games is the longest by an Emory program since the 2016 season when that squad opened the season with 11 straight victories. Sophomore Aidan Conley continued to be a force with the bat as he drove in six runs on the day and had the first multi-home run game by an Eagle in 2025 while junior Josh Zuckerman and senior Ryan Reynolds highlighted the team on the mound.
Game 1: Emory 9, Covenant 2 (7 innings)
Zuckerman and Conley provided the firepower in the first game of the afternoon up on the mountain top. Zuckerman won his second straight decision as he covered 5.1 innings on the mound and Conley continued to rake at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and smacked a pair of home runs.
Zuckerman was in cruise control early as he retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced and carried a no hitter into the fourth inning of the scheduled seven inning contest. He escaped that jam in the fourth with two strikeouts and took a shutout into the sixth where the Scots tagged him for two runs (one earned). Zuckerman finished the afternoon with a season-high nine strikeouts.
Conley and senior Blake Dincman helped out their hurler in the early innings as the duo staked the Eagles to a 5-0 lead through three. Dincman picked up a sac fly in the first and belted his first round tripper of the season in the third. Conley became the first Eagle with a multi home run game this season as he clubbed a three-run shot in the second and later hooked a solo blast around the right field foul pole in the sixth.
Behind Conley and Dincman, the Eagles also saw support from junior Zach Wasserlauf and sophomore Mitchell Smallwood as they put up a three-spot in the fifth. Wasserlauf plated senior Jack Halloran with a single prior to Smallwood bringing around Wasserlauf and Dincman with a single to left.
Game 2: Emory 15, Covenant 4 (8 innings)
The Eagles scored 14 unanswered runs, including a 10-run frame in the eighth inning, to complete the doubleheader sweep. All nine members of the starting nine had at least one RBI and Reynolds shined in a relief outing.
After scoring nine times in Saturday's opener, the Emory bats were quiet in the early offerings in the night cap as the Scots led 4-1 through four with the lone Eagle run coming via a wild pitch.
Following a Dincman RBI single in the fifth, the Emory offense began to show some life as the bats took advantage of the Covenant bullpen beginning in the sixth. An intentional walk to Conley set up a golden opportunity with the bases loaded for senior Matthew Sicoli and he delivered, doubling to right center to clear the bases and put the Eagles back in front at 5-4.
Two innings later the Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate with 10 coming around to score as Emory busted open the game. Four consecutive RBI singles by Wasserlauf, seniors Jonah Wronski and Brok Liu, and sophomore Zach Hanson increased the lead to 9-4 prior to big doubles from Conley and Sicoli made it 13-4. Halloran ended the scoring barrage as he launched his team-leading fifth home run.
Reynolds secured his second win of the season with four scoreless frame out of the pen. He worked around four hits while striking out five and did not walk a batter.
The Eagles will be back on the diamond this Friday, March 14th, as they open a three-game series with Piedmont. First game of the series is set to get underway at 3:00 PM in Demorest.
