The Emory University softball team scored 20 runs in the team's doubleheader against the Buena Vista University Beavers on Thursday afternoon at Cooper Field in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Eagles improve to 6-0 on the season, the team's first 6-0 start since 2016. Both offense and defense were highlighted in the matchup with the offense totaling 27 hits across both games while Emory pitchers allowed just four hits on the day.
Game 1: Emory 12, Buena Vista 0 (5 inn.)
The Beavers opened the top of the first inning with a double but junior
Mackenzie Duford got out of the inning unscathed. Fellow junior
Ashley Chu started the bottom of the first with a single followed by back to back singles from teammates
Rylie Ballog and
Eliie Zerr which scored the first run of the game. Sophomores
Sonia Klein and
Lillian Ware also notched RBI singles in the inning bringing in a total of four runs in the first.
Both pitchers were able to post scoreless innings in the second while stranding runners until the Eagles struck again in the bottom of the third. Zerr opened with a double to left field and advanced to third on a single from junior
Ella Hoyle. Freshmen
Megan Sutton and
Shivani Nangia both followed with RBI singles giving Emory a 6-0 lead.
Emory later scored six more runs on four hits and an error from Buena Vista's defense in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 12-0 lead after four complete innings. Freshman
Lauryn Selvaraj finished out the game in the circle getting three quick outs in the top of the fifth to secure the first win of the day.
Game 2: Emory 8, Buena Vista 0
After a quick first inning from sophomore
Lexi Bach in the circle, the Eagles took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a solo home run from Zerr to left field. Buena Vista recorded their only hit of the second game in the top of the second with a leadoff single to center before Bach struckout three batters to end the inning.
Four more runs came in for the Eagles in the second inning seeing five straight singles and a fielder's choice to load the bases and give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. The final run of the inning came on a bases loaded walk to Zerr for her second RBI of the game.
Sutton led off the bottom of the third inning with a single through the left side followed by a double from Klein to score Emory's fifth run of the game. Bach pitched her final inning of the game in the top of the fourth striking out another two batters for one hit and six total strikeouts, tying her career-high.
Junior
Isabel Cohen entered the circle for the top of the fifth inning allowing just one walk before getting three quick outs. A double and three singles from the Eagles' offense in the bottom of the fifth brought in two more runs before a single from sophomore
Abby Wylie scored the eight run of the game and clinch the second win of the day.
The Eagles will take on two ranked opponents this weekend in a three-team tournament. Emory will play the No. 17 ranked Pfeiffer Falcons on Friday, March 7 at 10:00 AM and the No. 25 ranked St. John Fisher Cardinals at 12:00 PM.
