The Emory University softball program took back-to-back comeback wins on Thursday afternoon against the Drew University Rangers.
The Eagles earn their fourth win of the Ulili Softball Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii and improve to 12-2 on the season. Emory went down early in both games and fought back to take both games, the first in walk-off fashion.
Game 1: Emory 7, Drew 6
The Rangers struck early in the top of the first opening with a single and a walk before advancing runners to scoring position on a wild pitch. They scored their first run of the game on a fielder's choice to shortstop but junior
Mackenzie Duford was able to get out of the jam with just one run.
Emory answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1 apiece. Freshman
Megan Sutton opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore
Abby Wylie. Sophomore
Lillian Ware followed with an RBI single to score Sutton and tie the game.
In the top of the fourth, the Rangers were able to tack on two more runs on a single and sacrifice bunt to reclaim the lead and hold a 3-1 advantage over the Eagles. Emory was able to cut into their lead again in the bottom of the inning opening with a triple from freshman
Rylie Ballog. Junior
Ella Hoyle continued the momentum with an RBI single to score Ballog.
Drew added three more runs to their tally in the fifth and sixth innings taking a 6-2 lead over the Eagles but Emory was not going down without a fight. Sophomore
Ellie Zerr reached second on a fielder's choice and was brought home on a double from Hoyle for the Eagles' third run of the game. Sophomore
Grace Cooper was able to reach by taking advantage of a fielding error from Drew and was brought home on a two RBI double from Sutton cutting the Rangers' lead to one run.
After a quick top of the seventh from freshman
Lauryn Selvaraj, the Eagles went into the bottom of the seventh needing a rally to clinch the win. Ware opened the inning with a single before freshman
Shea Johnson entered the game as a pinch runner. She advanced to second on a single from junior
Ashley Chu before stealing third base. Zerr brought home Johnson with a sacrifice fly to center field before Hoyle clinched the 7-6 win with a single up the middle.
Game 2: Emory 9, Drew 5
Sophomore
Lexi Bach got a strong start in game two getting three quick outs in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles were able to get back-to-back walks in the top of the second followed by an RBI single from Wylie to score the first run of the game.
The Rangers struck next in the bottom of the second scoring four runs on four hits. Selvaraj entered the game in relief and was able to record the third out of the inning. The next few innings were scoreless from both sides before Drew scored their fifth run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The top of the sixth inning was all Eagles as the offense notched seven runs in the inning. A walk to freshman
Addison Kwong started the inning with a walk followed by a bases-clearing triple from freshman
Shivani Nangia. Sophomore
Sonia Klein then scored Nangia on a single followed by back-to-back singles from Ware and Ballog to load the bases. Zerr, Hoyle and Janish all singled to take a 7-5 lead while Klein ended the scoring run with an RBI single for the Eagles' eighth run of the game.
After a quick bottom of the sixth from Duford in the circle, Emory scored another run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Zerr to clinch the ninth run. The Rangers were unable to score in the bottom of the seventh securing the Eagles' fourth win of the Ulili Softball Tournament.
The Eagles will take Friday off to explore the Hawaiian Islands before returning to the field on Saturday to face SUNY Oneonta and University of Puget S
