Historic Run Ends for Men's Soccer in Final Four; Falls to Trinity, 1-0, in OT

The Emory University men's soccer team's historic season came to end Friday night as the Eagles fell in overtime to Trinity University (TX), 1-0, in the national semifinals on a chilly, snowy night at Donald Kerr Stadium in Salem, Virginia.

The defeat puts an end to Emory's monumental season as the Eagles concluded the season with an overall record of 16-2-4. Emory's 16 wins matched a program record for victories in a single season while the appearance in the Final Four was the first in team history. The Tigers (20-1-1) will advance to the national championship game where Tufts University awaits at 12:00 PM on Sunday.

Emory came out of the gates as the early aggressor, racking up six of the eight first half shot attempts within the opening 27 minutes. Junior Julian Hee had the game's first solid scoring threat as he had a close range chance in the seventh minute but was turned away by the TU keeper. Later in the half, senior Adeyemi Oni also had a close range opportunity but was also stymied by the Tigers.

The Eagles ended the first half with an 8-1 lead in total shots with graduate student Ignacio Cubeddu leading the team with four attempts.

In the second half, Cubeddu continued the offensive pressure for the Eagles with three of the team's four shots out of the break while at the other end, junior Geoffrey Halpern registered two saves to keep the game scoreless.

In the 75th minute, sophomore Jake Breitegan had the best chance for either team but drew iron with his attempt at the right post. Moments later, a tackle nearly proved to be costly for the Eagles as the center referee awarded Trinity a penalty kick with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. However, upon video assistance replay the call was overturned.

In the closing seconds of regulation, junior Landon Redding had the Eagles' final scoring chance but his shot sailed high over the crossbar to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, the Tigers capitalized on the first chance for either team with Samuel Theiss scoring the game-winning tally in the 93rd minute. Luke Mayfield sent a pass out wide to Theiss who then made his way into the box putting a shot on frame and saw his attempt redirect off Halpern and into the back of the net to clinch the win.
