Women’s Basketball Stuns Trinity in 2025-26 Season Opener

The Emory University women's basketball team made quite the comeback to the court on Saturday evening defeating the Trinity Tigers, 85-58, in San Antonio Texas.

For the second consecutive season, the Eagles earn a win in the opening game of the season on the road and they will look to face their first ranked opponent of the season on Sunday. Making her return to the court was junior Riley Allen who has battled injuries for the past two seasons. She led Emory with 19 points while shooting 50.0 percent from beyond the arc.

Emory was able to take advantage of a 32.4 three point percentage compared to Trinity's 25.0 percent while also outshooting the Tigers in field goals and free throws. The Eagles' bench was dominant scoring 43 of the team's points.

Trinity took its first lead of the game just over four minutes into the game but back to back three pointers from teammates Mary Mullinax and Alexandra Loucopoulos pushed the Eagles back to a 12-7 lead with five minutes left in the first quarter. Later in the quarter, more threes from Allen and Loucopoulos gave Emory its biggest lead of the game but the Tigers were able to end with a 9-4 run cutting the Eagles' lead to 22-18 at the end of the first 10 minutes.

Just over two minutes into the second quarter, the Tigers were able to tie the game at 25 apiece but Emory answered with an 11-2 run in the next three minutes highlighted by two three pointers from Mullinax. The game was scoreless until the 1:23 mark with the Eagles finishing the half with a 7-2 run to take a 47-34 lead into the locker room.

The Eagles continued their momentum from the first half right into the third quarter taking a 16-point lead with 6:52 on the clock. Emory was only able to add four points in the next two minutes but also took advantage of a scoring drought from Trinity and held a 58-41 lead with just under five minutes remaining. The third quarter remained quiet with the Eagles finishing with an 8-3 run for a 66-44 advantage.

Emory scored just six points in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter while some of the freshman entered the game to see the first minutes of their Emory career. The next few minutes were dominant as the Eagles took their biggest lead of the game thus far with an 81-53 advantage with just 3:01 remaining in the game. Freshman Savannah Seawell saw her first career points in the final three minutes and helped Emory to an 85-58 win in the first game of the season.

Emory will travel to Belton, Texas to face No. 25 ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor on Sunday, November 9 at 1:00 PM EST.
