The Emory University women's soccer team continued its postseason run Saturday afternoon as the Eagles advanced to their second consecutive Elite Eight after defeating Johns Hopkins University, 3-1, at Alston Watt Field on the campus of Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.
With the win, Emory is on the brink of a return trip to the Final Four and is set to battle Pomona-Pitzer Sunday afternoon for a spot in the national semifinals. The Sagehens secured a penalty kick shootout win over the host Generals on Saturday to book their ticket to Sunday's quarterfinals. The Elite Eight matchup is scheduled for 1:00 PM in Lexington.
Sophomore
Mikayla Camp shined for the Eagles in the Round of 16 as she scored her first goals since September 27th, scoring in both halves to lead Emory past the Blue Jays. Camp collected her first tally Saturday afternoon in the 11th minute when she knocked in her own rebound. The lead was short-lived though as JHU found the game-tying strike eight minutes later with a goal from Carolyn Johnson.
The scored remained 1-1 for the remainder of the first half in large part to senior goalkeeper
Sophia Garcia as she picked up two of her four saves over the final 25 minutes of the opening half including a pivotal leaping save on a Blue Jays free kick in the 40th minute.
The Eagles came out strong in the second half with four opportunities within the first 10 minutes leading to another Camp goal in the 56th minute. A beautiful cross by sophomore
Emory Bozzuti found Camp on the edge of the six-yard box where she danced around the JHU defense and put in her 10th goal of the year.
Junior
Kaitlyn Nimmer found the put away score for the Eagles in the 81st minute when she fought her way through the Blue Jays defense and around the keeper for her team-leading 13th goal of the season. The Emory defense held Johns Hopkins to only five shots in the second half with just two being on frame.
Emory will look for its second straight Final Four berth and third in program history when play kicks off on Sunday in Virginia.
