The Emory University women's soccer team is headed back to the Sweet 16 for the third time in four seasons and 13th time in program history following the Eagles' 2-0 victory over Rhodes College Sunday afternoon in Atlanta.
The Eagles will be making a return trip to the Round of 16 after the team's back-to-back shutouts this weekend at home. Emory, now standing at 18-1-1 on the season, is set to face Johns Hopkins University in the next round as the Blue Jays toppled Stevens, 2-0, Sunday night to advance in the bracket. Time and location have yet to be announced as of Sunday night, please continue to monitor emoryathletics.com and Emory Athletics on social media for further updates.
The Eagles' victory on Sunday marked a milestone achievement in the history of the program as the 2025 version of Emory Women's Soccer became the first team in school history to win 18 games– setting the record for most in a single season. With the shutout, the Eagles also match the 2011 squad's program record of 16 clean sheets in one season.
Returning to the field in just over 24 hours since the win over Belhaven, the Eagles were slow to knock the rust off their cleats as both teams were feeling the effect of playing back-to-back days.
The first half saw neither side find the back of the net as play was contained. Emory led in total shots over the opening 45 minutes, 10-0, but only mustered three on frame.
The second half was where the Blue & Gold showed their strength as the team came out with more pressure, leading to 15 additional opportunities including six on goal.
The game's opening salvo was fired in the 57th minute when junior Kaitlyn Nimmer put the Eagles ahead. Classmate Madison Teng intercepted the loose ball following a Lynx turnover at midfield and sent a long pass towards the end line. Nimmer raced it down before beating one defender, switching control to her left foot and blasting a shot off the far post and in for her 12th goal of the season – marking a new career-high for the third-year forward.
In the 73rd minute, Teng added to the Eagles' total as she took control of the feed from senior Riley Miller, beating a Rhodes defender in stride before making a move around the keeper in one-on-one space and finishing it home.
Two goals were more than enough for the Eagles as Emory ended the game with a 29-0 margin in total shots, including 9-0 in shots on goal. Emory earned six corner kicks and did not allow one to the visitors.
