Men's Soccer Topples Hampden-Sydney, 3-0, to Return to NCAA Sweet 16

The Emory University men's soccer team has earned its first berth to the NCAA Sweet 16 since 2017 as the Eagles toppled Hampden-Sydney College, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in front of the Tigers' home crowd at Hellmuth-Gibson Field in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia.

Emory is set to make its fourth appearance in the Round of 16 in program history and the first since the team's quarterfinal run eight years ago. It will be the second trip to the second weekend for an Eagles team under the leadership of Head Coach Cory Greiner as he becomes the first head coach in team history to lead the Eagles to multiple Sweet 16 berths during their tenure.

With the win, Emory advances in the bracket and is set to oppose Rowan University in the third round. The Profs defeated Bridgewater State and Wesleyan (CT) to make it to the second weekend. Location and time have yet to be announced as of Sunday night, please continue to monitor emoryathletics.com and Emory Athletics on social media for further updates.

For the second straight day, the Eagles maintained control of possession over their opponents as Emory outgained H-SC 6-0 in corner kicks and held a 16-5 advantage in total shots, including a 7-5 margin in shots on goal.

For the majority of the first half, the teams were level at zeroes until Jake Breitegan broke the scoreless drought for both sides with a goal in the 37th minute. Freshman Terence Noh collected the assist on the play while the marker was Breitegan's third of the season.

Junior Nick Carrano doubled the Emory edge as he cashed in with his third goal of the year in the 57th minute as he put the Eagles up 2-0. Graduate student Jack Burgess and Owen Clark picked up assists on the play.

Graduate student Ignacio Cubeddu rounded out the Emory scoring with his put-away score in the 64th minute. The goal was unassisted and represented Cubeddu's team-leading 12th goal of the season.

Between the posts, junior Geoffrey Halpern was clutch as he recorded his sixth individual clean sheet of the year. Halpern made five saves on the afternoon with four of his stops coming in the second half to preserve the win.
