The Emory University volleyball program went 1-1 on Sunday afternoon at the third and final UAA Round Robin Tournament in Chicago, Illinois.
The Eagles hold a 14-5 record after defeating Rochester, 3-1 and falling to WashU, 3-2, in five sets. Leading the way offensively for the Eagles was junior
Gabija Staniskis who posted a career-high 15 kills in game one before beating that record in game two with 17kills.
Game 1: Emory 3, Rochester 1
The Yellowjackets were able to take advantage of errors from Emory's offense in the win posting a hitting percentage of just .010 (25-24—105) in the matchup. In the first set, Rochester took an early 8-6 lead with help from three service errors from the Eagles but Emory responded with a 12-1 run highlighted by kills from Staniskis and senior
Kaya Monrose to reclaim an 18-9 advantage. The Yellowjackets were able to put up four more points but the Eagles claimed the first set, 25-13.
Rochester came out swinging in the start of set two taking their biggest lead of the day with a 10-3 start. Sophomore
Maria Flynn was able to pick up a few kills helping the Eagles fight back to a 16-15 deficit but the momentum from the Yellowjackets couldn't be stopped. Rochester finished the set with a 9-3 run helped by attack errors from Emory to clinch set two, 25-18.
Set three was all Emory offense with the team posting nine consecutive points after opening with a 4-2 lead. The Eagles were able to reach their 20
th point following the fifth point from Rochester and the Yellowjackets continued to battle adding six more points to their total. Kills from Staniskis and Monrose ended the set for Emory with a 25-11 score.
The fourth set was a closer battle with an early 4-4 tie but the Eagles went on an offensive run to claim a 13-9 advantage. The next few points went between both programs but Emory finished with five straight points to clinch the match with a 25-16 score in the fourth set.
Game 2: WashU 3, Emory 2
A battle ensued between the No. 12 Eagles and No. 13 Bears in game two with the first set seeing eight ties before anyone reached 10 points. Both programs went point-for-point until the Eagles were able to pull away with an 18-15 lead but it didn't last long as WashU tied the set up at 18 apiece. The Bears then reclaimed the advantage with a 21-19 score until the set was tied again at 23 apiece. Two more ties were seen until back-to-back kills from senior
Olivia Rabinowitz gave Emory the two points they needed to clinch the set, 27-25.
Emory dominated the start of the second set with a mix of kills from Staniskis and Monrose and attack errors from the Bears helping the Eagles to a quick 9-1 start. WashU fought right back to jump to a 12-9 lead over Emory and later took their biggest lead of the day with a 16-12 line. Both teams continued to battle seeing four ties before a 20-20 score followed by a kill-for-kill movement leading to a 24-24 tie. A kill from Staniskis and a service ace from senior
Caroline Coyle pushed Emory to a 26-24 win in the second set.
The third set started with a back and forth battle with WashU pulling away towards the middle of the set with a 13-7 advantage, their biggest lead of the match thus far. Emory was able to fight back to a 16-15 deficit with kills from Monrose and Staniskis but the Bears finished with a 9-4 run to force a fourth set with a 25-19 win in set three.
Set four was dominated by WashU with the Bears opening with a large 14-9 advantage. The Eagles were only able to score three more points in the fourth set on two kills and a service error from WashU while the Bears finished with 11 more points to clinch the fourth set, 25-12 forcing a fifth set.
Emory was able to go point-for-point with WashU to begin the fifth set before the Eagles pulled away with an 11-7 lead following the court switch. The offensive momentum continued though from the Bears and took a 14-13 lead but Emory answered with another point for a 14-14 tie. WashU finished the match with back-to-back points for a 16-14 win in the fifth set.
The Eagles will return to the court on Friday, November 7 for the Emory Invitational where they will face Randolph-Macon at 4:00 PM and Ithaca College at 7:00 PM.
