Mullinax’s Double-Double Powers Women’s Basketball to 77-67 Win Over #25 Carnegie Mellon

The Emory women's basketball team kept its UAA slate rolling on Friday, taking on the No. 25 ranked Carnegie Mellon Tartans. Fueled by sophomore Mary Mullinax's first career double-double, the Emory women's basketball team (11-6, 3-3 UAA) took down the No. 25 ranked Carnegie Mellon Tartans, 77-67, in front of a home crowd at the Woodruff P.E. Center in Atlanta, Georgia. With the win, the Eagles improved to 11-6 on the season and sit at 3-3 during UAA play.

Mullinax stole the show for Emory, notching career highs in points and rebounds with 15 and 11, respectively. She added four assists to the ledger as well. Graduate student Hanna Malik matched Mullinax, also scoring 15 points, knocking down four three pointers in the contest. Senior Erin Martin scored a season-high 11 points to go with seven boards.

The Eagles wasted no time getting the offense rolling, with Malik and Martin knocking down threes in the opening two minutes as Emory opened on an 8-2 run. The Tartans were able to answer, though, to keep the game from getting out of hand early. Emory experienced a bit of a scoring drought after the strong start, scoring just three points over the next six minutes. Junior Chloe Kreusser picked up a couple of buckets down low in the waning moments of the first quarter, as Emory ended the frame trailing, 16-15.

The second quarter started as a near carbon copy of the first quarter, with the Eagles starting on an 9-2 run. Mullinax scored four of those points, with Malik knocking down a three over the stretch as well. The Tartans, continued to answer, though, as they were able to pull within four after knocking down a flurry of shots. The teams traded blows down the stretch of the first half, with Emory taking a 38-29 lead into the break.

The Eagles held the Tartans to just 12-of-28 shooting from the floor in the first half.

It took the Eagles a bit to get going at the start of the third quarter, scoring just one point in the first three minutes. Martin scored the first field goal of the half for Emory when she knocked down a three-pointer with just less than seven minutes to go. The shot kicked off another 8-2 run, with Malik hitting a three before Mullinax added a bucket to give Emory's lead a nice cushion. The UAA foes continued to match one another for the remainder of the quarter, as Emory entered the final quarter with a 57-47 lead.

The final frame got started with a bang, with Carnegie Mellon's Catherine Or knocking down a deep three. Yet, Malik had a quick answer and knocked down a three-pointer from way out just seconds later.

With seven minutes to go, the Eagles led 66-54. The shots stopped falling, though as Emory scored zero points for the next three minutes, allowing the Tartans to pull within just six. Sophomore Alexandra Loucopoulos put an end to any comeback bid, though, finishing off a strong and-one play to give the Eagles a nine-point cushion they would not surrender. For every shot the Tartans made, the Eagles had an answer as they closed out the win to secure their third conference win.

The win sees the Eagles improve to 3-3 in conference play with eight games to go. Emory is tied for third in the UAA standings, behind No. 1 ranked NYU at 6-0 and WashU at 4-2.

Emory has another chance to earn a conference win this Sunday when they take on Case Western Reserve. The game against the Spartans is set to tip off at 11:30 AM at the Woodruff P.E. Center.
