#2 Men's Basketball Falls at Home to Chicago in Overtime

The No. 2 ranked Emory University men's basketball team was handed its first University Athletic Association defeat Friday night, falling to the University of Chicago in overtime, 80-70, in front of a standing-room only crowd inside the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta.

The Eagles erased a five-point halftime deficit to force the extra period but shot just 2-for-6 in overtime as the Maroons outscored Emory 16-6 en route to the ten-point victory. With the loss, Emory now slides to 13-2 overall while the Maroons improve to 12-3. Both teams now stand at 3-1 inside conference play.

Senior Logan Shanahan notched his second-straight double-double with team-highs 19 points and 10 boards. Sophomore AJ Harris went for 18 points, including 3-for-6 from long range, and junior Jair Knight dropped 14 points. For Chicago, Thomas Kurowski supplied a game-high 34 points to go along with nine rebounds, five steals and four assists to power the Maroons.

A slow start saw the teams combine for 16 points through the opening eight minutes with Chicago jumping out to a 5-0 lead with three minutes gone by. A three-pointer from sophomore Ethan Fauss broke an 8-8 tie at the 11:25 mark but a 7-0 run from the visitors pushed Chicago ahead at 15-12.

The teams traded buckets for the next five minutes before Chicago went on another mini-run, rattling off eight straight points to lead 28-21 – its largest lead of the half – with 4:59 remaining until the halftime whistle. The Eagles answered with a 9-3 burst of their own with three triples from junior Ben Pearce, Harris and Knight before Chicago scored the final four points of the period to head into the break in front 35-30.

The Maroons increased their lead to as many as nine in the early stages of the second half and would hold the advantage until another triple from Harris knotted the score at 51-51 with 8:14 left to go in regulation. Another bucket from Harris gave Emory its first lead since the first half at 55-54 with 6:32 to go.

From there, three straight conversions from Shanahan helped build the Eagles' edge to as many as six with 3:01 showing on the clock. However, Emory missed its next three shots to allow the Maroons to pull even at 64-64 in the closing seconds. The Eagles had one more shot to win in regulation as the play call gave senior Albert Fallas an open look from the corner with four seconds left but his attempt clanked off iron to send Emory into overtime for the first time this season.

UC's Joe Berry, who tied the game with 21 seconds left, opened the extra period with four straight points prior to Harris' third three-pointer of the evening which brought Emory to within one at 68-67 with 3:38 to go.

Another basket from Berry prior to a pair of steals from the Maroons leading to a Kurowski lay-in gave Chicago a five-point cushion but a knock-down triple from Shanahan made it a one-possession once more at 72-70 with 1:47 to play.

Two more costly turnovers by the Eagles led to a fast-break dunk by Jackson Piotrowski and Chicago was able to convert five free throws over the final 31 seconds to put the game out of reach.

Emory looks to bounce back Sunday afternoon as it will close out its first home UAA double weekend with a 12:00 pm tilt against No. 11 ranked WashU.
