The Emory men's tennis team continued singles play at the ITA South Regional on Monday afternoon, picking up with the quarterfinals. Two Eagles separated themselves from the pack on Monday, with junior
John Lasanajak and graduate transfer
Efe Comu winning their matches on Monday to punch their ticket to the final round. The event was held at the Rome Tennis Center in Mount Berry, Georgia.
After taking down the No. 2 seed and last year's champion Jordan Theron on Sunday, Lasanajak picked up where he left off and made quick work of his opponent in the quarterfinal round. He triumphed over North Carolina Wesleyan's Rodrigo Montes De Oca Murillo in straight sets, winning 6-2 and 6-3. He faced off against Montes de Oca Murillo's teammate, Diego Segovia, in the semifinal match. Segovia dominated Lasanajak in the opening set, shutting him out, 6-0, to secure the first point. Yet, the junior showed his mettle and battled back to win the following two sets, 7-5 and 6-4 to give him a shot at the regional crown tomorrow.
Comu was awarded the tournament's top seed and has lived up to the reputation. The transfer has shined in his first event with the Eagles, having not dropped a set at the ITA South Regional. His stretch of dominance extended into Monday, besting Alvaro Gomez of North Carolina Wesleyan, 6-4 and 6-2. Comu once again was exceptional in his semifinal match, winning in straight sets over NC Wesleyan's Bohdan Zhylchuk, 6-2 and 6-4, advancing to the championship round of the event.
Junior
Dean Kamenev was the third Eagle to compete today, falling in straight sets to Segovia, 4-6 and 1-6.
After their continued strong performances on Monday, Comu and Lasanajak will now meet in the championship match on Tuesday afternoon. The duo elected to play the match at Emory's home courts at the Woodruff P.E. Center. They're set to begin play at 1:30 PM.
