The No. 10 ranked Emory University women's soccer team went toe-to-toe against No. 9 ranked Christopher Newport University Saturday afternoon but dropped a 1-0 decision to the Captains at Appenzeller Field on the campus of Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.
A goal in the final minute of the first half proved to be the difference on Saturday as CNU improved to 4-0-1 while the Eagles slipped to 3-1 and saw their three-game shutout streak halted.
Christopher Newport held the Eagles without a shot during the opening 45 minutes but the Emory backline was equally stringent as the score remained scoreless until the final minute of the half when CNU broke through.
With 11 seconds left until the halftime break, the Captains' Grace Shifflett buried a shot from 15 yards out to put Christopher Newport on the board. Junior Sophia Garcia was drawn off her line to make a play on the ball. CNU regained control of her redirect with CNU's Bella Ventimiglia dishing out the ball left of the penalty stripe to Shifflett who stepped into a shot and found the empty net.
Following the break, the Eagles were the aggressors as they out shot the Captains 7-6 in the second half, including three shots on frame.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Nimmer had Emory's first shot of the game in the 50th minute when her shot from 25 yards out drilled the middle of the crossbar. Nimmer had two more shots in the half, including one more on frame in the 84th, as she led the Eagles with three attempts.
Emory saw two additional chances prior to the final whistle with freshmen Mikayla Camp and Emory Bozzuti each registering shots on target in the 69th and 80th minutes but were turned away by the CNU keeper.
In total, the Captains led the shots category 13-7 (6-3 in SOG) and earned one additional corner kick, 5-4.
Emory will conclude its weekend in Greensboro on Sunday, taking on Guilford College in a 1:00 PM kick off at Appenzeller Field.
