#5 Volleyball Closes VolleyWOW Weekend with Back-To-Back Wins on Saturday Afternoon

The Emory University volleyball program finished the UNW VolleyWOW Weekend with wins against the Gustavus Adolphus Gusties and the UW-Stevens Point Pointers on Saturday afternoon in St. Paul, Minnesota.
 
The No. 5 ranked Eagles improve to 9-1 win the wins and pick up their second ranked win of the tournament against the No. 12 ranked Gusties. Junior Kate LaRocco led the team offensively posting 22 kills on the day including 12 against Gustavus Adolphus to tie her career high. Senior Madison Cail followed with 20 kills and 3.5 blocks. Junior Olivia Rabinowitz continued her success on the offense posting 41 assists on the day, 24 against Gustavus Adolphus.

Following the final game, LaRocco and sophomore Sophia Luo were named to the VolleyWOW All-Tournament Team while LaRocco was named Tournament MVP.
 
Game 1: Emory 3, Gustavus Adolphus College 0
 
The Gusties started strong opening the first set with three points but the Eagles followed with three points of their own to tie the match. Gustavus was able to continue with their 12-10 lead while taking advantage of attack errors from Emory's offense. The Eagles followed with 10 straight points highlighted by three kills from LaRocco taking a quick 20-12 lead towards the end of the set. The Gusties weren't finished yet and followed with a 9-3 run to cut Emory's lead to just two points before a service error gave the Eagles their 24th point of the set. Gustavus scored another two points but a kill from freshman Maria Flynn clinched the set for Emory with a 25-23 line.
 
Emory's momentum continued into the second set opening with a 9-3 run highlighted by five kills from the Eagles' offense. The Gusties tired to pick up the momentum scoring five more points cutting Emory's lead to 11-8 but the Eagles were able to keep up and continue their advantage. With Emory holding a five point, 18-13 lead, Gustavus scored three back-to-back points. Emory ended the set with five straight points to take set two, 25-18.
 
The third set was another back and forth battle between the two teams with Emory holding a 5-4 lead before the Gusties tied the match at five. Three more ties were seen in the next six points before the Eagles pulled away to an 11-8 lead taking advantage of attack errors from Gustavus' offense. Once again, the Gusties continued to tie the match before notching five straight points to take a 17-14 lead, their first lead of the set. Emory was able to tie the set again highlighted by kills from Cail before a kill from Luo clinched the match with a 25-23 score.
 
Game 2: Emory 3, UW-Stevens Point 0
 
After starting with the first set tied at two apiece, the Pointers followed with a 6-4 run to take an 8-6 lead. The Eagles were then able to tie the set again at eight before taking an 11-10 advantage. The back and forth continued between the teams with the first set seeing four more ties while the Eagles pulled away with a slight 19-17 lead before ending the set with a 6-2 run to clinch set one, 25-19.
 
The beginning of set two saw more ties between the two programs before Emory pulled away with a slight 5-4 lead. The next eight points were even bringing the score to 9-8 Eagles but a kill from the Pointers and an attack error from Emory tied the match again at 10 apiece. Out of the next 10 points, nine were in Emory's favor forcing a timeout from UW Steven Point to regroup with the Eagles holding a 19-11 advantage. Both teams ended the set with a 6-6 run but the Eagles were able to take the second set with a 25-17 score.
 
Both teams carried momentum into the third set of the match with three ties in the first six points of the set. The Eagles were able to take a slight 5-3 on a kill from LaRocco but the Pointers were able to tie the set taking advantage of attack errors from Emory. After the set was tied at 10, the Eagles scored three back-to-back points on kills from sophomore Sophie Zerrouki and Luo forcing UW-Stevens Point into their first timeout of the set. Out of the break, the Pointers went on a 4-1 prompting the Eagles to call their first timeout to regroup. The two programs were going point for point towards the end of the match before Emory notched three points on kills from Luo to hold a 23-21 advantage. The Pointers were able to tie the set again at 23 apiece but Emory clinched the set 25-23 on back to back attack errors from UW-Stevens Point.
 
The Eagles will return to Georgia next weekend to compete in the Vikings Classic hosted by Berry College. Emory will face Covenant College and Berry on Friday, September 20 at 4:30 PM and 7:00 PM respectively.
