Women’s Soccer Trounces Roanoke, 4-0, to Win Season Opener at Home

The Emory University women's soccer team (1-0, 0-0 UAA) got its season started on the right foot on Saturday, taking down the Roanoke Maroons 4-0 at the Woodruff P.E. Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The Eagles saw four different players find the back of the net, two of which being a pair of newcomers as Mikayla Camp and Laina Denys scored their first collegiate goals in the win.

While it took the Eagles a bit to knock the rust off the offense and get things going, the Eagles out-shot the Maroons 10-3 in the first half. Emory took a couple of threatening shots that rattled the crossbar before they eventually broke the seal. In the 33rd minute, sophomore Kaitlyn Nimmer swung in a cross off a cornerkick before sophomore Lola Feurer sent one in towards the net where Katie Hungness cleaned it up to score the Eagles' first goal of the season. This was Feurer's first career point as an Eagle as she and Nimmer tallied the assists on the goal.

Led by junior Riley Miller, the Emory backline was nearly perfect on Saturday, allowing just one shot on goal in the entire game. That shot came shortly after the Emory goal, but junior Sophia Garcia made the stop to keep the Eagles out in front. The Eagles would have a few more chances in the half but settled for a 1-0 lead at the break.

The Eagles came out of the half fast, though, as Camp charged into the left side of the box and finished the chance to record her first career goal to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 48th minute.

The Eagles continued to put pressure on the Maroons, controlling possession and taking threatening shots on net. Nimmer came close a number of times, taking shots from distance that narrowly clipped the crossbar to give the Maroons some relief. However, in the 71st minute, she capitalized. Nimmer lofted a shot in from outside of the box that floated just over the reach of the outstretched Roanoke goalie to extend the lead to 3-0. Nimmer would finish the game with eight shots, three of which being on goal.

Just 14 seconds later, Denys stole the ball after the ensuing Maroons kickoff, darted inside of the box and finished it off herself to score her first career goal as an Emory Eagle.

The Eagle defense continued to serve as a brick wall, preventing the Maroons from taking a single shot in the second half. Emory allowed the next 20 minutes to play out to secure the 4-0 victory.

The Eagles outshot the Maroons 22-3 over the full 90 minutes while also leading the cornerkick battle, 7-2.

Emory will have the week to rest up before they travel to Mount Berry, Georgia to play a couple of games next weekend. They'll get started on Friday with a tilt against Southern Virginia University at 5:00 PM before taking on Berry College at 1:00 PM on Sunday.
