In Emory volleyball fashion, the No. 9 ranked Eagles opened the 2024 season with a 3-0 win over the Greensboro College Pride on Friday night in Atlanta, Georgia as the Eagles celebrated College Colors Day.
The seniors led the way in the season opener with
Madison Cail and
Jessica Majka both finished with eight kills while teammate
Lily Martin followed behind with seven. Junior
Olivia Rabinowitz started strong notching 20 assists and seven digs while senior
Deborah Hong posted a team-leading nine digs in the match.
After an opening point from the Pride, the Eagles followed with an 11-2 run before their first substitutions of the set. The teams went back and forth until Emory held a 22-12 lead over Greensboro towards the end of set one. Majka ended the first set with two kills before a service ace from junior
Caroline Coyle helped the Eagles to a 25-12 finish.
The Pride were able to take an early 10-3 lead in the second set taking advantage of two service aces before kills from sophomore
Sophie Zerrouki and Martin helped gain momentum for Emory halfway through the set. The Eagles later took advantage of attack errors before tying the match at 18 a piece thanks to three back-to-back kills from Majka. The energy continued into the end of set two with Emory going on a 7-3 run to take the second set 25-21.
Carrying the momentum into the third set, the Eagles had another runaway set taking a 10-3 lead including six straight points. The Pride fought back bringing the score to 12-6 before another five straight points from Emory gave them a 17-6 lead. After the Eagles took a 23-10 lead, Greensboro was able to score two more points, but the effort wasn't enough and Emory took set three, 25-12.
Emory will return to the court tomorrow, August 31 to finish the Jenny McDowell Invitational. They will face Huntingdon College at 12:30 pm and Piedmont at 4:30 pm.
