For the first time in program history, the Emory University men's basketball team is the No. 1 ranked team in Division III college basketball as d3hoops.com released its week 3 national poll Monday evening.
The Eagles secured 14 of the 25 first-place votes to move up two spots in the rankings. Emory earned 607 points across the voting panel consisting of 25 coaches, Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country. Â Emory was ranked No. 8 in the preseason and had climbed to No. 3 in recent weeks. The Eagles' highest ranking ever came during the 2019-20 season when the program was slotted at the No. 2 position for four straight weeks.
Emory is off to its third-best start to a season in team history, sitting at 8-0 through the first stretch of the season. The Eagles have picked up four wins over nationally ranked programs and are outscoring opponents by 18.8 points per game – the 10th-best scoring margin in the country. The Eagles are one of 16 undefeated teams remaining in Division III.
In addition to scoring 86.5 points per game, the Eagles boast numerous figures that rank among the best in the nation. As of Monday, Emory ranks seventh in Division III in assist/turnover ratio (1.77), blocks per game (6.0), field goal percentage defense (36.8) and currently leads the UAA in rebounding (43.2), offensive rebounding (14.6), steals (9.3), three-point percentage defense (25.6) and turnover margin (5.1).
The junior duo of
Jair Knight and
Ben Pearce are among the top-six in the conference in scoring with Knight averaging 21.1 on the season and Pearce checking in at 17.8. Furthermore, senior
Logan Shanahan is the conference leader in blocks (22) while Knight and sophomore
AJ Harris lead the UAA with 16 steals each.
The Eagles will return to the court on December 29 & 30 when Emory hosts its Holiday Classic in Atlanta. The Eagles will take on Kean University in the tournament opener before opposing Union College the following afternoon.
