The No. 13 ranked Emory University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with No. 10 ranked University of Rochester Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale for both programs. Prior to the start of the match, the Eagles honored seniors Chayse Corfman and Claudia Schmidt with a special on-field ceremony.
The opening minutes housed both of the afternoon's goals as the score was even at 1-1 through just 3:29 minutes of game action.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Nimmer fired the opening salvo just 81 seconds into the contest as she scored her 10th goal of the season. Freshman Mikayla Camp set the scoring up with the feed to the right side. Nimmer controlled possession, used a hard cut to deke a defender and ripped a left-footed shot to the top left corner. Nimmer is the first Eagle to reach the 10-goal mark in a single-season since Jamie English registered 11 during the 2007 season.
The 1-0 lead was short-lived as the Yellowjackets provided a response two minutes later to level the score. Natalie Santangelo looked to send a cross to the far post, but her pass had enough slice on it to find nylon. The goal was Rochester's lone shot on goal in the entire match as the Eagles settled in to keep UR at bay.
Following the flurry action over the first 3:29, neither side could find the go-ahead strike as the match ended in a stalemate. Emory owned a 20-6 edge in total shots and out-gained Rochester 12-1 in shots on goal.
The Eagles had five shot attempts from Nimmer and sophomore Madison Teng that were on target in the second half as Emory looked to breakthrough. Three of the five opportunities came within the final four minutes of the game but UR's Grace Kuropatkin thwarted each chance to preserve the draw.
Both Emory and Rochester finish the regular season at 11-3-3 as they now turn their attention to the NCAA postseason. Both teams will find out their postseason fates this Monday, November 11th when the selection show airs on NCAA.com at 2:00 PM.
