The Emory University women's soccer team rolled to a 6-0 victory over Methodist University Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the NCAA Championships, played at the WoodPEC in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Eagles saw six different players register a goal and Emory thoroughly controlled possession, finishing the game with a 47-0 margin in total shots and had 19 shots on goal.
With the win, the Eagles advance to the Round of 32 for the fifth time in six seasons. Emory will face Pacific Lutheran on Sunday with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line. The Lutes defeated Maryville College, 1-0, in the other first round contest on Saturday, scoring with six minutes remaining in regulation.
Sophomore Madison Teng led off the scoring as she was one of three goals in the first half as the Eagles scored three times in each half to defeat the Monarchs on Saturday. Sophomore Kaitlyn Nimmer tracked down a loose ball on the left side of the box before sending a centering pass to middle, finding an open Teng who fired a shot past two Monarchs for her third goal of the season.
Eight minutes later, freshman Mikayla Camp found the scoring column with a long-ranging strike from the top of the 18. Senior Chayse Corfman set the play up as she dished a pass to the open Camp on the left side. Camp made one move around a Methodist defender before launching a shot to the top right corner.
Junior Michelle Davidson capped off the first half scoring with her second goal of the campaign two minutes after Camp's score. Nimmer provided a corner kick into the crowded box where Methodist attempted to clear it. The ball found Teng at the top of the 18 where she fed Davidson on the left side who in turn slotted it into the near post.
The score remained 3-0 until the 71st minute when another rookie found the scoring column. Nimmer collected her third assist of the contest when she sent another excellent centering pass to the middle of the six where a sliding Alexandra Burtis-Wyant was able to corral the pass and finish from close range. The goal was her second of the second.
The Eagles made it 5-0 in the 81st minute when freshman Laina Denys joined her classmates in the box score, scoring her third of the season. Burtis-Wyant sent a curling pass into the middle of the box to Zia Tomlin. Tomlin attempted to make a play of the pass, taking a rip but her attempt was offline. The attempt found Denys on the right side who housed it for the goal.
The final tally came in the 87th minute when sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Carr sent the Emory sideline into jubilation when she scored her first career goal with a successful penalty kick.
The Eagles look for their 12th berth to the Sweet 16 in team history as action against PLU from Atlanta is set to get underway at 3:00 PM.
