#3 Men's Basketball Hits Century Mark in Wire-to-Wire Win; Downs Piedmont 103-74

Box Score

The Emory University men's basketball team hit the century mark for the first time this season, leading wire-to-wire in a 103-74 victory over Piedmont University Tuesday evening at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Eagles, who moved to No. 3 on Monday in the first edition of the D3hoops.com national rankings, now improve to 5-0 to start the season. It is the first 5-0 start for Emory since 2019-20 and the seventh-best start in program history.

Fifteen different Eagles found the scoring column on Tuesday with five reaching double figures. Senior Logan Shanahan and juniors Jair Knight and John Coppolino IV each had 13 points to lead the home bench while sophomore AJ Harris and senior Cale Martens added 12 and 10, respectively. Shanahan seized a game-high seven rebounds and swatted away four shots as the Eagles had 11 blocks as a team.

Emory limited the Lions to 30.2% shooting from the floor while shooting 47.2% themselves. The Eagles sank 15 threes, including 12 in the first half.

The first three shots for the Eagles were converted from long range as a three by Harris at 15:47 pushed Emory ahead 9-6 and started a 10-0 run. Piedmont cut the deficit to nine at 20-11 with 11:22 to go in the opening half but an answer three at the other end from Coppolino gave Emory a 23-11 edge and would not see the lead dip below double digits for the remainder of the contest.

A 20-6 run highlight by points from seven different players, including six from Knight, helped the Eagles extend their lead to 40-17 in the half with Emory leading by as many as 24 before settling on the 50-30 halftime margin.

The second half saw more run out of the Eagles depth pieces as they outscored Piedmont 53-44 in the period and led by as many as 27 before finishing with the 29-point margin over victory. Martens had seven of his 10 points in the second half while freshman Harry Kitey netted a season-high seven points in less than four minutes of action.

The Eagles look to continue their momentum following the Thanksgiving break when they host crosstown foe Oglethorpe University on Monday, December 2 at 5:30 PM at the WoodPEC.
