The Emory University women's soccer team prevailed with its third University Athletic Association victory Saturday afternoon, holding on to defeat the University of Chicago, 3-2, in front the Woodruff PE Center fans in Atlanta.
In the penultimate game in the 2024 regular season, the Eagles outlasted the Maroons to improve to 11-3-2 overall and into third place in the UAA standings at 3-2-1. UChicago sees its record fall to 10-6-1 on the season and 2-4 inside conference play.
Emory had control of the game's momentum in the first half as freshman Emory Bozzuti and sophomore Emily Woodall staked the Eagles to a 2-0 lead.
Bozzuti registered her fifth goal of her rookie campaign in the 29th minute to open the scoring. After spinning around a UC defender, Bozzuti lifted a cross to the far post. Her pass sliced to the right working in the Eagles favor as it drilled the post and into the back of the net.
Just over ten minutes later, Woodall doubled the Emory advantage with her sixth tally of the season. Freshman Jaymie Frith dished a pass out to the right flank to Woodall where she worked around one Chicago defender before curling a beautiful left-footed shot over the Maroons keeper for the goal at 38:24.
The game remained at 2-0 until the 74th minute when UC's Indira Naylor notched her 11th goal of the season to cut the Emory lead to one.
Sophomore Madison Teng added a much-needed insurance goal in the 81st minute as she collected her second goal of her second season. Freshman Mikayla Camp had a nice back-heel pass to Teng at the top of the 18 before Teng ripped a shot to the right post.
The Maroons did not go quietly, adding another goal in the 86th minute as Kamiryn Grimes picked up the goal as she scored off the rebound following a Sarah Ginsburg shot that was initially saved by junior Sophia Garcia.
Chicago's goal was the final attempt for either side as the Eagles secured the one-goal win. Both team recorded 16 shots in the afternoon title with the Eagles finishing with an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Garcia ended the day with five saves between the posts.
Emory looks to close out its regular season next Saturday, November 9th, at home against #15 University of Rochester. Prior to the 11:00 AM kickoff, the Eagles will honor Claudia Schmidt and Chayse Corfman as part of the team's Senior Day celebrations.
