Men's Soccer Falls at Lynchburg in NCAA First Round

The Emory University men's soccer team saw its season come to an end Saturday afternoon, falling to the University of Lynchburg in the opening round of the NCAA Championships.

The Hornets were able to enact revenge in the second meeting between the two schools this season, scoring once in the first half and twice in the final six minutes of regulation to upend the Eagles 3-0 in Lynchburg, Virginia. With the defeat, Emory closes its year with an 8-7-2 overall record while Lynchburg will advance to the second round to face Dickinson College.

The Hornets' William Casey headlined a quiet first half for both teams as he found the back of the net in the 39th minute to give Lynchburg a 1-0 edge. The Eagles had just one shot attempt across the first 45 minutes with an offering from graduate student Ryan Winkler missing high in the 32nd minute.

Both sides increased the intensity in the second half with 12 shots total, including four from the Eagles.

Senior Sebastian Rincon had Emory's first shot on frame in the 75th minute but was turned away by keeper Thomas Viscuso. The Eagles added two more shots on goal over the final ten minutes with a Winkler chance in the 81st and another attempt from freshman Phillip Head in the 88th but both were turned away by the Lynchburg keeper.

The Hornets saw the lead increase to 2-0 in the 85th minute when Manzi Shalita scored before adding another tally in the 88th with a Kohlby Wilson marker.

The season caps off another highlight-filled year for the Greinerball faithful as the Eagles won their second straight UAA Championship and the ninth in program history. This marked the fourth NCAA tournament appearance for the Eagles during the tenure of Head Coach Cory Greiner.
