The No. 23 ranked Emory University women's soccer team bounced back Friday night in the first leg of its double UAA weekend on the road. A first half goal helped the Eagles secure their 10th win of the season as Emory dropped Brandeis University, 1-0, in Waltham, Massachusetts.
Freshman Mikayla Camp scored the decisive goal in the 19th minute as the Eagles ran its record to 10-3-1 on the season and evened their UAA ledger at 2-2. The Judges remained winless in conference action following the defeat, slipping to 0-4 inside the UAA, and now stand 9-5 overall.
Midway through the first half, sophomore Jessica Nastasi sent a cross into the box but was thwarted by the Brandeis keeper. The loose ball found classmate Katie Hungness at the top of the box who ripped a shot on frame. Her attempt was saved but the rebound dropped to Camp who fired her own attempt at the goal and had enough power behind it to deflect off multiple defenders on its way to the back of the net. The goal was Camp's eighth of the season and now trails sophomore Kaitlyn Nimmer by one score for the team lead.
The Eagles had several additional opportunities on the evening but 11 saves from Brandeis' Rachel Ross kept the score at 1-0 throughout. Emory finished with a 17-12 advantage in shots and doubled the Judges in shots on goal, 12-6.
At the other end of the field, junior Sophia Garcia was lights out between the posts to record her fourth clean sheet of the season. Garcia stopped a season-high six shots, one shy of her career-high, in the shutout. No other save loomed as large as her stop in the 86th minute as Brandeis lined up for a free kick opportunity. The shot curled around the Emory wall, but a diving Garcia made the save near the low near post to preserve the win.
Next up for the Eagles will be a meeting with No. 15 NYU on Sunday in Newark, New Jersey on the campus of NJIT. Emory's road finale is set for a 12:00 PM kickoff.
