The No. 23 ranked Emory women's soccer team (9-3-1, 1-2-0 UAA) made the trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this weekend to take on No. 4 ranked Carnegie Mellon (10-0-3, 3-0 UAA) in a conference showdown. In a game that featured just 11 total shots, the Eagles were on the wrong side of the defensive struggle, falling to the Tartans, 1-0.
The first half was a stagnant one, with the Eagles mustering just one shot and the Tartans having just four with one of which being on target. The Emory backline alongside junior goalkeeper
Sophia Garcia was able to squander four corner kick opportunities in the half. The two squads went to the half both searching for answers on offense.
It was much of the same in the second half, with neither offense finding any luck. Sophomore
Katie Hungness notched the lone shot on goal for Emory early in the second half, but Carnegie Mellon's Abby O'Connor smothered the shot to keep the game scoreless. It wasn't until the 79
th minute that the game's first goal was scored. After the Tartans lofted a ball into the box, Garcia was able to punch it out, but Carnegie Mellon's Emma Kim gathered the rebound at the top of the box and send a shot into the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles had one final chance to tie it up late in the half with a free kick near the top of the box. Senior
Chayse Corfman had a look on the free kick but sent it just high over the net as the Tartans came away with the 1-0 win. Emory was outshot, 8-3, in the match.
With the loss, Emory falls to 9-3-1 overall and 1-2-0 in UAA play. The Eagles will look to get back on track next weekend as they hit the road for a pair of UAA matches. They'll start with #20 Brandeis on Friday, October 25
